Cyndi Lauper blasts gay MAGA activist Brandon Straka’s appropriation of “True Colors” for #WalkAway campaign

Things have gotten “so unusual” when it comes to one of Cyndi Lauper’s biggest hits.

The pop music legend is peeved that one of her most heartfelt songs is being peddled by an ardent supporter of President Trump, whose mission is to encourage disenfranchised groups to support the caustic commander-in-chief.

“As a gay man in America, I spent most of my life believing that Republicans hated me,” #WalkAway campaign founder Brandon Straka said with the release of his audacious cover of the Lauper staple “True Colors.”

“In the past few years, I’ve received more love, support, and respect from Republicans, Donald Trump supporters, and the president himself than I ever could have previously thought possible,” the red Make America Great Again hat-loving ex-liberal said. “I created the ‘True Colors’ video to offer the same love, support, and respect back to these people who have given me so much,” the activist continued.

The original song, written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, was recorded and released by Lauper in 1986 as the lead single from her “True Colors” sophomore album. The Grammy Award nominated Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping hit has stood the test of time and morphed into an LTGBQ anthem.

Lauper, who launched her longtime career with the 1983 opus “She’s So Unusual,” also used the title of the song for the True Colors Fund nonprofit initiative geared at eradicating LGTB youth homelessness.

So it should come no surprise that the Grammy and Tony Award-winning Brooklyn native has taken umbrage to Straka’s appropriation of the tune — which was immediately blocked from YouTube on copyright grounds.

“I have not heard this version and won’t be listening to it,” Lauper tells The Daily News. “I recorded ‘True Colors’ to be a healing song and it’s not appropriate for anything MAGA related.”

The 43-year-old New York City hair stylist, who hails from Nebraska, said he chose “True Colors” to convey “the unfortunate inability to live and express ourselves freely transcends the boundaries of what is traditionally thought of as just pertaining to minority classes of people in America.” “It also pertains to those who love and support our President, our law enforcement, our military, our sovereign nation, and our flag,” Straka added.

Since 2017, the conservative media darling has been promoting the “WalkAway” hashtag — which began as a social media video/written testimonial campaign. Straka’s efforts has garnered more than 1 million followers on social media platforms.

One of the song’s co-writers said he originally wrote the lyrics for “True Colors” for his mother and had no idea it would be what it has become — especially now.

“Once a song becomes part of society’s consciousness, anything can happen with it,” Steinberg shared. “I wouldn’t have predicted ‘True Colors'’ relevance to the LGBT movement or its use in a political campaign.”

Lauper rerecorded an acoustic version of the song in 2005. Notable covers of “True Colors” included versions by Phil Collins, the cast of “Glee,” Westlife’s Shane Filan, and Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick (for the “Trolls” soundtrack in 2016).

Steinberg said he and Kelly “obviously” are happy that it has continued to resonate emotionally for people.

Tweets at link. Cindy Lauper's got her panties up in a wad (poor choice of words when dealing with this particular celeb demographic?)over her biggest hit being used to promote the eeevil Orange Man. The same Orange Man who gladly let her use his Celebrity Apprentice show to raise funds for her charity helping homeless gays. What an effing ingrate. She didn't mind raking in the dough when Kodak used True Colors in their ads to sell cameras, didnt she?

that’s too bad... Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors is one of my all-time favorite songs... i like Phil Collin’s rendition too, but i like hers a bit more... some of it has to do with where my life was at the time her song came out—1986... i was 21 years old...

Not surprising - she’s not nor has she ever been about togetherness or diversity.

She’s used the poor and oppressed as pawns (like lady Gaga) to enrich herself against the “male patriarchy”.

Obama could do everything Trump did and she and Mel Brooks would be singing his praises. But it’s not, nor was it ever, about ideology. It was all kabuki theater as she now throws a homosexual under the bus.

“You ain’t black if you don’t vote for me” isn’t the rantings of a demented man... it’s a Freudian slip.

The Mrs and I saw Lauper with Rod Stewart in concert a year ago. She was laughable, like an old Jersey Grandma trying to pole dance on stage. It still would have been entertaining but, as so many entertainers HAVE to do these days, she had to subject the audience to her politics with a voting lecture near her finale. Rod stayed with his music.

If anyone questions why I would see these two in concert, the tickets were free for vets.

It’s not Lauper’s song - she’s just one of the artists who chose to record it. If she doesn’t like another artist recording it she’s welcome to pout impotently, as she’s doing.

“The pop music legend”

Is there any has-been singer of songs who is not a “legend”?

Amen, she behaving as if she wrote the song herself. Well she did not, but I am glad that the songwriter found nothing wrong with Brandon using his song to lift the Human Spirit.

She didn’t write the song so her moaning about how it belongs to her is just too bad.

Remember when Al Gore’s wife tried to cancel Cyndi Lauper over “She Bop”?

Rod Stewart has a secret hobby (maybe no so secret any more) of building model trains and train dioramas. He would take a set of buildings with him on concert and spend his spare time making buildings and trees and stuff. A real train nerd. Sheldon Cooper (the Big Bang Theory character) would love him.

I respect Rod Stewart for avoiding politics at the concert. Cindi needs to learn to shut up and sing, and leave the politics and the pole-dancing at home.

When you put art or music into the world it’s no longer you’re sole province.

I’m no expert but I’d say “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time after Time” were bigger hits.
