Golden Scars

Bible in a Year:

If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

2 Corinthians 11:30

In the Netherlands, a group of fashion designers offer a “Golden Joinery” workshop. Inspired by the Japanese technique Kintsugi, where broken porcelain is visibly repaired with gold, participants collaborate in mending clothes in ways that highlight the mending work rather than trying to mask it. Those who are invited bring “a dear but broken garment and mend it with gold.” As they remake their clothes, the repair becomes ornamental, a “golden scar.”

Articles of clothing are transformed in ways that highlight the places where they were torn or frayed. Perhaps this is something like what Paul meant when he said that he would “boast” in the things that showed his weakness. Although he’d experienced “surpassingly great revelations,” he doesn’t brag about them (2 Corinthians 12:6). He is kept from getting proud and overconfident, he says, by a “thorn” in his flesh (v. 7). No one knows exactly what he was referring to—perhaps depression, a form of malaria, persecution from enemies, or something else. Whatever it was, he begged God to take it away. But God said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (v. 9).

Just as the rips and tears in old clothes can become sights of beauty as they’re remade by designers, the broken and weak places in our lives can become places where God’s power and glory may shine. He holds us together, transforms us, and makes our weaknesses beautiful.

By:  Amy Peterson Reflect & Pray

What are some weaknesses you try to keep hidden from the world? How has God revealed His power through your weakness?

God, may all my scars become golden as You heal and repair me in ways that bring glory to Your name.

Back in 1973, my dad was the XO at Naval Communication Station (NAVCOMMSTA Cheltenham) and was only a few miles up the road from Andrews.

When the POWs were flown in, a bunch of us went over to welcome them home. Very memorable.

I had a great time living on that small base. They were best known for being one of the “Moonbounce” stations that was facilitating communication between Washington DC and our forces on the other side of the world by actually bouncing the communications off the moon and relaying them over there.

IIRC, there were five stations, and this moonbounce technology was state of the art, until we began getting communications satellites into orbit in the 1960’s.

When I was there, the giant parabolic antenna which seemed like it was about 30 yards across (wow! Is my memory good-I just did an Internet search and found that it was 86 feet across!) was obsolete and unused, and we would get on the top of the building and climb around on it...:) Kind of like giant monkey bars...really dangerous. Here was the text I found on it:

“Building 84 was completed in 1957 to house the Communication Moon Relay (CMR) system. This rectangular, poured concrete building exhibits few openings. The front elevation contains paired metal doors and one small window. The flat roof originally featured an 84-foot steerable parabolic antenna known as the moon dish; this antenna was removed in 1986.”

One time, we found the lock to the abandoned building broken, and went inside. There were some old desks, fluorescent lights stacked which we promptly destroyed, and we began to pull huge pieces of asbestos pipe plaster off the pipes and threw it against the walls, which caused it to explode, completely covering and immersing us in white clouds of...asbestos powder.

That will probably kill me someday. We were rambunctious little 13 year old brats...but...the building was a wreck anyway! My dad would have killed me if he found out we were screwing around in there!

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

How's everyone doing this morning?

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Are you and Gizmo still enjoying beautiful weather for your outings at the lake?

It’s been pretty here but it’s unbearable to walk out the door. I think every farmer in the county is taking advantage of the dry weather to harvest their fields and the air is full of choking dust. Dusty has one crew here now harvesting cotton and another crew across the road harvesting a huge field of soybeans. It’ll be a couple more days before they move on to other fields Dusty owns or rents. UGH!

Well, I'm getting ready to take the pickup to the Ford place this morning for the 95,000 mile checkup. We had a great visit to the vet. Giz got his monthly heart worm pill.

Here are some pics from yesterday. The first one is at the vet. All the others are from Comanche Lake.

Happy Gizmo! Got to see Ringo and it looks like it wasn’t a very sunny day yesterday. No baking in the sun to drain energy.

Good for staying on top of things with your truck. You’ll get a LOT more miles on it before it ever bites the dust.
