STEPANAKERT, Nagorno-Karabakh — On the front line, the stench is overwhelming. The remains of fighters have been lying there for weeks.

In the trenches, there is fear. The Armenians are defenseless against the Azerbaijani drones that hover overhead and kill at will.

At the military graveyard, bulldozers have scraped away a hillside. It is already lined with two rows of new graves, along with soon-to-be-filled, freshly dug, rectangular holes.

The three-week-old conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over a disputed territory in the Caucasus Mountains, where Europe meets Asia, has settled into a brutal war of attrition, soldiers and civilians said in interviews here on the ground in recent days.

“Disputed territory.” Just happens to be Christians vs moslems. As usual for that part of the world.

Nagorno-Karabakh has been a contested area for decades. Armenia’s only been able to keep a toehold on it because they control a buffer zone between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Otherwise it’s clearly in Azerbaijan.

This conflict has been seeded by Stalin, originally peoples comisar of nations. Stalin draw almost all internal borders within the Soviet Union. He liked to create disputed areas to Divide and rule. Nagorno Karabakh is one of these areas. Clearly Armenian, it was intentionally placed within Azerbaijan to created problems. People are still loosing their lives for Stalin’s folly!

Other Stalin’s ares which are or were fought over:
Transdniestria, Southern Ossetia, Abkhazia, Chechnya, Parts of Ukraine, Tadjikistan (Fergana).
There are many more where the fights could start.
All seeded by Stalin! That guy was real evil.

“Armenians are defenseless against the Azerbaijani drones”
...............
That would be Israeli drones sold to Azerbaijan and flown by Turkish operators.

Sadly, as history has shown through the ages, many times over they’ve paid for their leaders siding with evil. This will be no exception and has been foretold; even to the appearance of drones on the battlefield.

“leaders siding with evil”
............
Azeri’s are Turkic peoples. They broadly support, not just the leaders, an ethnic cleansing and extermination of the Armenian peoples.

I read where someone stated that when the USSR broke up, the Russian leader at the time said it was the greatest human disaster.....meaning that people and countries that lived next to each other peacefully were not at each others throats.

Yes and by looking at a bunch of U Tube videos they are very effective. The Armenians are really getting pasted and don't have any air defenses. I feel for them they are are sitting ducks.

Putin told something on that line.
That is actually not too relevant.
Soviet Union was created from old Russian tsarist empire. It was on paper a free association of sovereign states. Soviet constitution actually guaranteed every republic the right to secede! Stalin would obviously executed anybody who would even think about that!
Problem was that the borders between the Republics were drawn by Stalin and what he really wanted was to made sure that the people were divided! So he had drawn the borders intentionally to make sure they could never split peacefully. However, in 1991 when Soviet union felt apart, these, artificial, Stalin drawn lines, suddenly became real borders. And Stalin’s design worked! Immediately fightings started.
Were Soviet Republic drawn according to real population distribution, there would be no fightings.
BTW, there are areas in dispute which so far have not exploded. E.g eastern borders of Estonia and Latvia and some, I am scared to even list here, as not to start some ethnics war unintentionally.

I want to make small correction.
The Nagorno Karabakh conflict started first, actually under Gorbachev. The Armenian residents of Nagorno Karabakh started demanding a transfer of the region from Azerbaijan to Armenia when the Gorbachev started loosing the grip of Communists on the Soviet Union.
First major demonstration was in Feb 1988, three years before the split of Soviet union. As a matter of fact, the last years of Gorbachev rule were marred by ethnics fights between Armenians and Azeri, which let to ethnics cleansing and murders of Armenians in Azerbaijan and Azeris in Armenia. Right now, the line of fight is a line of nationalities. There are no Armenians left in Azerbaijan and no Azeri in Armenia remaining! All either left or were killed. Of course if Nagorno Karabakh is taken over by Azerbaijan, there would be no Armenians left there in an instant! That’s the bottom line! Azerbaijan claims are purely legal (Stalin gave us this land.) Armenians are fighting for survival!
