North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper sailed through the March primary election, giving an acceptance speech about growing up the son of a public school teacher and working on a farm.
He touted his successes since being elected in 2016, including repealing the controversial House Bill 2, and his work on goals like closing the health care coverage gap.
But he said something else in that speech, too: With the challenge of the new coronavirus, I want you to know my team is up to the task, that we are prepared and we are ready to move North Carolina forward.
Just hours earlier, North Carolina had reported its first case of COVID-19. All of a sudden, the coronavirus pandemic the statistics, the shutdowns, the reopenings commanded Coopers attention above almost anything else.
A week later, Cooper issued the first of many executive orders aimed at controlling the spread of the virus, declaring a state of emergency to coordinate the states response to the pandemic. More came swiftly, shutting down schools and restaurants and limiting gatherings.

Both he and Cal need to be shown the door.
Will he get it?
It concerned me that neither Trump nor Pence, during their most recent rallies in NC, endorsed Dan Forest.
A TERRIFIC IDEA !!!!
TRUMP should get another term too!
After all, his term of office was defined by the coronavirus also
Yep
If states re-elect their COVID fear-mongering, leftist lockdown jailers they deserve all of the bad things that happen to them.
Governor Cooper's defeat on November 3rd would send a powerful message.
DEMONcRAT Mike Espy (the Crook) is running for the Senate in MS against Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith. Yes, of course he is Black.
Lots of outside money pouring in for Espy. Big surprise...
Saw a new Commercial for him last night (on Fox). He actually brought up President Reagan’s name as someone he admired.
I wanted to hurl big chunks when I heard that.
I’m hoping he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. I’m new to MS and I assume there is enough common sense to override the uninformed Voting Base who might swallow the Leftist swill being put out there.
The County I live in went for Hillary in 2016 by a large margin. Makes me shudder...
Herr Stooper is that rare individual who is actually stupider than he looks.
Yup. Cooper has not been as batshit crazy as some of the governors but is every bit the authoritarian with the covid crap.
North Carolina politics has always been wonky. I'm predicting that Trump wins in a clean sweep (except for Raleigh/Durham, Charlotte, and probably Asheville) but Cooper gets re-elected. Which would suck.
Then again, I'm hearing from friends still there and they universally remark that Cooper is LOATHED by the retail industry especially. People are getting fed up with his dictates.
I can not stand to see pictures of this stupid man, I hate to hear his voice. I have early voted against the cooperfuhrur and pray that millions of Good Tarheels will join me.
I know that. However, each man recited a litany of endorsements, live, to an audience of tens of thousands, to a listening public of millions, and Forests name was conspicuous by its absence.
Roy Cooper is an asshat who needs to lose.
That bothered me too. What would it have cost them to plug all the republicans in NC races, particularly Forest, Robinson, and O’Neill?
