Federal Judge Allows 21 Businesses to Sue Seattle Over Harms Caused by CHOP ( formerly known at CHAZ )
Newsweek ^ | 10/17/20 | DANIEL VILLARREAL

Friday, a federal district court judge allowed a lawsuit brought by 21 businesses against the city of Seattle to proceed, despite the city's attempt to have it dismissed.

The lawsuit accuses the city of harming local business owners by allowing the existence of Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP), a self-declared autonomous zone that was established and occupied by racial justice protestors from June 8 to July 1.

The occupied zone blocked all car traffic, reducing the businesses' access to customers, vendors and revenue, the lawsuit says. The lawsuit further alleges that city police largely neglected the zone, allowing protesters and others to damage business property and threaten business owners without punishment.

Lastly, the lawsuit states that the city provided concrete barriers, medical supplies, washing and sanitation facilities, portable toilets, lighting and other material support, including the use of Cal Anderson Park to CHOP occupiers, and told police to adopt a "no response" policy wherein officers wouldn't arrive unless a 9-1-1 caller reported "significant life safety issues."

...

by allowing CHOP to operate for a month before police eventually shut it down, the city unlawfully took their private property for public use with no compensation, restricted their ability to fully use their property to conduct business and failed to protect the businesses from a danger of the city's own making.

This should set precedent....like strip-searching and cavity-searching teen girls for protesting abortion in maryland a few years ago....obvious precedent.

Yeah, there’s pics all over social media showing BLM/ANQUEEFA types openly carrying those nasty “ assault rifles”, and not one word from the Karens from Moms Demand Action or the little shyts from March for Our Lives. Hell, they support them.

“racial justice protestors”, this is missing the words “Alleged” or “Claimed”.
Without qualifiers some readers might be misled to believe the terrorist punks were actually attempting to achieve what they claimed rather than the orgy of targeted and random violence that actually occurred.

As to illegal firearm transfers, it seems those laws only apply to licensed dealers and conservatives.

.....”pay out will come form the state and city coffers, the tax payers”.....

Of course...which is why the Mayor had no worries abut how Much destruction there was or would be. However not sure there couldn’t be a civil suite by the businesses against the Mayor?

Paid for by taxpayers of course; and when they win, Seattle will raise taxes to pay for it.

American voters put Obama in office even though he was a total fraud and not eligible to be president. Then, American voters put the bastard in office again.

Seattle voters put these marxists/socialist/communists in power ergo it’s fair enough that they have to pay off millions of dollars in this lawsuit.

I agree with you that the council persons should pay directly but the next best thing is that the morons that elected them DO PAY!

In the past, many states, truly protected Americans’ freedom and property. They had laws that made cities responsible for damage caused by mobs and riots.

The logic is that through specific government policy, government decisions, and political policing (sound familiar?) the government was ultimately responsible for public disorder, and damage suffered by private owners was a form of government illegally taking private property. It was called negative condemnation under eminent domain laws

These laws were gradually removed and were gone by the 1960s, as leftists and social engineers took over city governments.

I can’t wait for the first state to bring these back.

Worse than that! Municipalities usually carry large liability policies to protect the muni from financial ruin due to wrongdoing by elected officials or employees!

We do get the government we vote for! Time for freedom loving Americans to wake up from their wokeness.

No, I’m sorry to say that the taxpayers of Portland need to learn that there are consequences for electing the leaders that they chose. Certainly, there will be people who didn’t vote for these idiots who will be hurt. Hopefully, they will move out and not lose too much on their homes before they have to deal with the fallout.

Portland is big enough to be self-insured, this may indicate this:

They are just suing themselves when they sue the city, because every dollar the city has comes from them..

They should be able to sue the mayor and city council personally, and they should be personally liable.
