Czech Republic faces medical 'collapse': Army builds field hospitals as Europe's number one Covid hotspot sees record 9,544 new cases

The Czech Republic is facing a medical 'collapse' with the army rigging up field hospitals as the country suffers the worst infection rate in Europe.

After escaping the first wave relatively lightly, the Eastern European country has been battered by a resurgence in recent weeks which has infected more than 4,000 hospital workers and forced the closure of schools, bars and restaurants.

Hospitals are treating six times as many virus patients as during the first wave, with other surgeries being cancelled and plans being drawn up for patients to be exported to Germany, Hungary or Poland.

'We are in danger of collapsing here,' interior minister Jan Hamacek told Czech media, adding that 'there will be corpse freezers in the streets' if the outbreak is not contained.

Czech health officials today announced a new record of 9,544 cases in 24 hours, taking the total to 139,290, while 66 more deaths took the total to 1,172.

The country's infection rate of 586 cases per 100,000 people in a week is the highest on the continent ahead of Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Britain and Spain.

In March, the Czech government was fast to close borders, schools and businesses, suppressing the epidemic with only thousands of infections.

Czech authorities announced a ban on foreign visitors as early as March 13, when the country had only 120 cases and no deaths. Britain did not start imposing quarantines until the first wave had subsided.

The Czech government was also a pioneer in ordering the use of masks, which became compulsory outside the home on March 18. By contrast, Western European governments were slower to adopt masks.

However, the Czech government also went further than most in relaxing the unpopular restrictions over the summer and was reluctant to bring them back even as cases started climbing.

Sized up to the US population, the Czechs are seeing what would be a US-equivalent number of 1800 dead a day, and 300,000 new daily infections. Below the peak US daily dead number of 2500, but far above the peak US daily new infection number of under 80,000.

So what’s the story?

I know our medical facilities here are the reason the number of dead isn’t quite higher.

And it’s a virus that should be treated as something serious for the older or the already ill.

Is this who it is killing over there?

I don’t know why I think you know but you seem to know a lot :)

Thanks ahead of time if you do.

Same story. A virus being used as a global political tool. At first, it was like the treatment was killing the very ill.
Days after trump announced he is immune.. “scientists have proven a women who contracted covid in april has been ingected with a genetically differnt strain”.
They. Have succeeded in mail in voting, but they want more. America the brave is masked and compliant.
Worldwide this is their ultimate chance to destroy America. She gives more freedom and opportunity than any in the history of civilizations.
So keep being compliant America..because science says so.
Meanwhile.. its an RNA virus DA.. of course its a different strain. It is built into the nature of all RNA viruses.
And they cooked up a goody.
I do suspect the treatments may still be dangerous.

I was just in Prague two months ago and everything seemed fairly normal. Not sure where this spike is coming from. I had planned on going back in November but that may not happen now...

Nobody knows anything. Seriously. We’re all just guessing. Lockdowns will collapse the economy and put in place permanent and debilitating welfare programs, on top of the massive debt incurred. So they’re a no-no. But peak flu season is generally from November till February. So it’s possible we ain’t seen anything yet.

I’m hoping the daily death numbers stay below 1,000 before the elections, to deny the Dems a talking point. But I expect those numbers to revisit 2,000 and probably peak above 3,000 in December. Hopefully after a Trump victory.

Re Trump’s bout with the virus - the main thing we can conclude is he’s got good genes. Healthy as a horse despite a bout with the virus. Which means that his stats aren’t a lie. Despite being overweight, that energy comes from a cardiovascular system that’s as clean as a whistle.

Well Trump got that cocktail which I know not NEARLY enough to comment on. :)

Christie was ok and he’s not in top form.

But I guess it’s a numbers game. If enough people get it, then a certain amount will die.

I definitely think the facilities a country has plays an important role.

Or I could be wrong :)

But shutting down the economy again is not an option.

Here in NYC the theaters are shut until MAY!!!

And this 25 percent dining crap...not many are opening their doors..supposed to go to 50 percent on November 1.

Most still haven’t gone back to their office jobs and most won’t until new year.

Insanity.

Work? Family? Fun? :)

I haven’t been to many places so I’m just curious.

What’s it like?

It’s modern, right? As far as hospitals, etc. go?

Trump is going to win.

And he and we will have four more years to get this country’s act together.

he has done great things.

And Rudy will bury hunter and pop over the next three weeks :)

The Czech Republic has very good medical facilities. Medical tourism has helped upgrade its gear from Warsaw Pact to Western standards. The numbers here are fudged, but they show that the Czechs are basically within striking distance of the West:

Poland and Hungary are in the same boat. All of Eastern Europe was very lightly hit during the first wave in March-May, but they are definitely catching up now.

The upward swing can be seen in virtually all European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Czech, etc).

I would attribute it to three factors: (1) Warmer period dissipated cough ‘droplets’ in the air quicker, and we’ve entered the fall period where it lays in the air or on surfaces longer. (2) More in-door drinking/eating going on, than in out-door activities in the summer period...so ‘droplets’ get spread more easily in the structures. (3) Finally, lot of young people have said ‘what-the-heck’ gone to secret parties instead of all this regulated stuff, and early curfews being enforced on clubs/pubs.

I should note too...everyone is testing five to ten times more than they did in March/April.

I can say since day one (Feb period), in my local German town (Wiesbaden), the infection rate is started back up. 290k population, and only 24 deaths. I should note too...we hit some peak in June where the deaths just halted around 22, and stayed there for roughly three months before starting up again. Most all of these attribute to people over the age of seventy, and having secondary health issues.

One other factor...flu season has started up. No science behind it or factual data, but you have to wonder if you got a bit of flu and Covid at the same time...your immune system probably would be terribly taxed to handle both.

There’s a (politically- and psychologically-understandable) urge to declare victory if you had a good first wave. The problem is there’s a lot we don’t know about this virus. It’s been decades since Ebola showed up, and we’ve only just had a drug approved for it. I expect experts will be discovering many more things about this new bug for years or decades to come. And all those gaps in knowledge are why getting a cure won’t necessarily be easy despite the massive amounts of money shoveled at it.

I understand why we want a vaccine yesterday, but the fact is this may be like childbirth - one woman can have a child in 9 months, but 9 women can’t have a child in 1 month. There may be things about this bug we don’t know, can’t resolve since we don’t know about them and therefore can’t apply to a working cure.

Thanks and thanks :)

Town of 290k, pepsionice? You said the number of dead out of 290k was 24?

Zhang you said that their hospitals are almost at western standards at this point.

So the hospitals are getting full with people that have it but the death rate seems low.

My quick math (which means probably wrong lol) tells me it’s on par or lower than the US mortality rate.

But with numbers being fudged and without knowing if COVID is what primarily killed people in certain instances...ah, what a mess.

And yeah I guess one can get the flu and COVID at the same time in winter...there’s a variable to consider.

Ah, i’m lost :)

This shows that the lockdowns and masks do not result in better outcomes.

All nations, regardless of how they handled the virus, have similar outcomes over the long term.

In the US, states that did not do strict lockdowns and mask mandates did not have worse outcomes than states with extremely strict lockdowns and strict mask mandates.

The statistical data is frankly...crapped out.

In Germany for example...most cities are telling x-number dead. Some cities are extremely blunt and data-resourceful....telling you the daily death count, their age, and if secondary conditions exist (Wiesbaden does it that way). Other cities skip that part of the story.

Then you have the problem of tests. Say in your region 2k tests were accomplished today. Then they report 350 were positive. Well...they never tell you the starting number (2k). Also, they never break it (300 men and 50 women)...that will never be displayed.

Then you come to multiple tests. Maybe you only had two symptoms and your doctor said lets do the test anyway (they would NOT have done that in April). So you come up positive 24 hours later. Maybe you don’t trust the result....so you ask for a second test (because you marginally have two symptoms), and the second test shows positive again. Those two tests (positives) count as two individuals....not one. No one can say out of 2k tests done today in a region...that 40 of them are repeats. Then you have the issue of a test at the end of 12 days...maybe you test for a 3rd time...maybe still as a positive then. That will be counted as three separate infections...not one person.

Regionally, the vast majority of infected folks do home-quarantine (I would guess near 95 percent). You got to have severe breathing issues or major secondary problems to get the slip to enter the specialized hospital rooms for the virus. But again, this type of data is not openly discussed, nor are journalists smart enough to ask questions.

Prostitution is legal in Czech Republic. Lots of sex tourism. One factor in the rise of cases.

I have not seen studies on this, but population density has to be a major factor, perhaps the most important one.

That was why I always thought quarantines made a whole lot more sense than lockdowns.

If an urban area had a hospital capacity problem, you could just quarantine it and keep outsiders away from it....that was how they handled these things in the “old days”.
