Susan Collins struggles to change the subject from Brett Kavanaugh in Maine Senate race

The last time Sen. Susan Collins faced a Democratic challenger, she was considered practically invincible.

“No politician is ever bulletproof, but Collins is close,” University of Maine political scientist Mark Brewer told the Portland Press Herald in 2013.

At that point, Collins had already won three Senate races, expanding her share of the vote each time. She went on to defeat her rival, former ACLU leader Shenna Bellows, with almost 70% of the vote.

Six years later, everything has changed.

Collins is in the race of her life against Maine’s Democratic House speaker, Sara Gideon. With 3½ weeks to go, Collins is down in just about every poll as she seeks a fifth term from Maine voters.

A Collins loss in the state, where former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump by nearly 15 points, could further imperil the GOP’s precarious hold on its majority in the Senate.

What happened?

To many Mainers, the answer has a lot to do with Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The Kavanaugh vote Even as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pushes to confirm Trump’s next pick for the Supreme Court, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, the fight over the last vacancy is continuing to shape the race for the Senate.

“Normally I am hesitant to ascribe too much to one particular vote that a legislator takes,” Brewer said in a recent interview. “I think in this particular instance, her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh really has gotten the attention of a lot of people.”

Maine has slowly become the Oregon of the East.

She should change it to her opponent’s emerging sex scandal.

My understanding is that their welfare benefits were relatively high and their cost of living by Northeast standards relatively low. So the taker classes flocked there.

It’s a shame if she loses because she did the right thing. Too bad she couldn’t vote no and still get him on the court. Unfortunately it was that close that her vote was needed.

Yes, like Ogunquit it's now leftist. I find I can still bear Freeport even though that's going Left as well.

She is a dolt.

She should reply, “If Kavanaugh on unsupported charges then Biden should be in prison as a child molester. It’s that simply. If you oppose Bret Kavanaugh, you can’t vote for a Democrat.”

Maybe so. I think the biggest factor there is that the weather is so inhospitable and the base of professional jobs is so small that many people who grow up in Maine would rather move elsewhere if they can. As a result, Maine is always clamoring to be included in refugee resettlement programs for mutants from every dump on the planet. Without this influx of immigrants the place would be losing population.

That’s an excellent point. Local politicians only care about keeping raw numbers up for the Census in order to maintain power and their seat on the Washington Gravy Train.

It amazes me that after all this time, anyone really believes Ballsy Ford and the other accusers.

Didn’t they all just up and disappear after he was confirmed?

If they were really, truly harmed, wouldn’t they have stuck with their charges?

What does this say about Liberals?

They’re still pissed their DESPICABLE LIES against an HONEST MAN didn’t work????

Don’t they understand that the falsehoods set back real women’s testimony 50 years?

Says a lot about the people of Maine that they can’t see through the Democratic sham on Kavanaugh. But not in a good way.

But Maine voters would elect a liberal who knowingly looked the other way when a colleague was biffing an underage female.

All three were total BS. Ford’s claims about a high school party were full of holes and her own friends that had been at the party weren’t able to corroborate much about her story. The accuser from college said she couldn’t remember anything about the incident herself, but was able to piece it together later through secondhand information. And the last “accuser” had basically nothing to share about Kavanaugh himself. Just that she had been to the same parties and supposedly knew what boys did at them.

Maine voters have to be pretty stupid to punish Collins for refusing to fall for that.
