An extremely violent attack. The assault on two policemen from the Cergy branch of the Versailles PJ on Wednesday in Herblay (Val-d'Oise) sent shock waves through the police and public opinion on Thursday. The course of events will be refined but the known elements are overwhelming. At 10:23 p.m. on Wednesday, the Val-d'Oise Information and Command Center (CIC 95) received a call from a man in shock. He explains that he is from the PJ and that he has just been assaulted by three individuals, along with one of his colleagues, who lies unconscious by his side. The two police officers were investigating an attempted kidnapping between thugs in Argenteuil (ten kilometers from Herblay), which the Pontoise prosecutor's office had seized with the PJ that morning. In this context, they wanted, according to a police source, to carry out "checks" in an industrial zone of Herblay, place of various trafficking (drugs and trafficking of all kinds by travelers).

In civilian clothes and in an unmarked car, the police are then, according to the testimony of one of the two attacked officials, approached by surprise by three people of African, mixed-race and North African type who take them first for people from the trip. The two policemen present their cards and identify themselves as belonging to the national police. "But far from dissuading the criminals," notes a source close to the investigation, "this identification seems to have unleashed violence."

Extracted from their vehicle, the police officers are severely beaten. One, a 45-year-old brigadier-major, has a dislocated shoulder and suffers from a head trauma. The other, a 30-year-old peacekeeper, has a fractured skull. The criminals then seize the service weapons of their victims and shoot them. The brigadier-major was injured in the calf and right tibia. The peacekeeper was hit by four bullets in the legs and pelvis, which cut an artery and triggered internal bleeding. Thursday, his vital prognosis was engaged, the doctors still reserving their diagnosis. The three attackers leave with weapons, the brigadier-major's cell phone and a portable police radio.

Investigators are particularly interested in a suspect identified under strange circumstances. At 10:14 p.m. on Wednesday, nine minutes before the attacked policeman's call, CIC 95 received another call: an unknown person reported that people were being attacked in the Herblay industrial zone by "gypsies" claiming to be police officers with arms and armbands. This correspondent was identified by his number. Aged 28 and living in Hauts-de-Seine, he is known to the police, in particular for drug trafficking. Investigators question his involvement in the assault. All the protagonists in the attempted kidnapping in Argenteuil will also be heard.

Une attaque d’une extrême violence. Survenue mercredi à Herblay (Val-d’Oise), l’agression de deux policiers de l’antenne de Cergy de la PJ de Versailles a répandu jeudi une onde de choc au sein de la police et dans l’opinion. Trois suspects sont recherchés par des centaines de policiers, pour «tentative d’homicide sur personne dépositaire de l’autorité publique en bande organisée».

Jeudi, devant le commissariat de Cergy-Pontoise, le ministre de l’Intérieur, Gérald Darmanin, a dénoncé un «massacre», «deux actes de terrible sauvagerie, (…) une sauvagerie qui est devenue quotidienne, contre des policiers, et dont personne ne pouvait ignorer qu’ils étaient policiers».

Le déroulé des faits sera affiné mais les éléments connus sont accablants. Mercredi à 22 h 23, le centre d’information et de commandement du Val-d’Oise (CIC 95) reçoit l’appel d’un homme en état de choc. Il explique qu’il est de la PJ et qu’il vient d’être agressé par trois individus, en compagnie d’un de ses collègues, qui gît inconscient à ses côtés. Les deux policiers enquêtaient sur une tentative d’enlèvement entre voyous à Argenteuil (à une dizaine de kilomètres d’Herblay), dont le parquet de Pontoise avait saisi la PJ le matin même. Dans ce cadre, ils souhaitaient, selon une source policière, faire des «vérifications» dans une zone industrielle d’Herblay, lieu de divers trafics (stupéfiants et trafics en tout genre par des gens du voyage).

En civil et à bord d’une voiture banalisée, les policiers sont alors, selon le témoignage d’un des deux fonctionnaires agressés, abordés par surprise par trois personnes de type africain, métis et maghrébin qui les prennent d’abord pour des gens du voyage. Les deux policiers présentent leurs cartes et s’identifient comme appartenant à la police nationale. «Mais loin de dissuader les malfaiteurs, note une source proche de l’enquête, cette identification semble avoir déchaîné la violence.»

Extraits de leur véhicule, les policiers sont sévèrement battus. L’un, un brigadier-major de 45 ans, a une épaule déboîtée et souffre d’un traumatisme crânien. L’autre, un gardien de la paix de 30 ans, a le crâne fracturé. Les malfaiteurs se saisissent ensuite des armes de service de leurs victimes et leur tirent dessus. Le brigadier-major est atteint au mollet et au tibia droit. Le gardien de la paix est touché par quatre balles dans les jambes et le bassin, qui sectionnent une artère et déclenchent une hémorragie interne. Jeudi, son pronostic vital était engagé, les médecins réservant encore leur diagnostic. Les trois agresseurs repartent avec les armes, le téléphone portable du brigadier-major et un portatif radio de la police.

Les enquêteurs s’intéressent particulièrement à un suspect identifié dans des circonstances étranges. Mercredi à 22 h 14, neuf minutes avant l’appel du policier agressé, le CIC 95 a reçu un autre appel: un inconnu signalait que des personnes étaient agressées dans la zone industrielle d’Herblay par des «gitans» prétendant être des policiers avec armes et brassards. Ce correspondant a été identifié par son numéro. Âgé de 28 ans et résidant dans les Hauts-de-Seine, il est connu de la police, notamment pour trafic de stupéfiants. Les enquêteurs s’interrogent sur sa participation à l’agression. Tous les protagonistes dans la tentative d’enlèvement à Argenteuil seront aussi entendus.

Dans un message à l’ensemble des fonctionnaires de police, le patron de la police nationale, Frédéric Veaux, dénonce «une tentative de meurtre dans des conditions particulièrement sauvages et odieuses». Pour le secrétaire national de Synergie Officiers, Benjamin Iseli, «même si certains prétendent le contraire, l’ ensauvagement de la société est réel. On n’hésite plus à tomber sur la police et à lui tirer dessus!». Secrétaire général du Syndicat des commissaires de la police nationale, David le Bars estime que «cette agression suscite la sidération. C’est inédit et on assiste à une escalade de la violence».
