Top scientists are calling for a herd immunity approach to the coronavirus pandemic by allowing people who are less vulnerable to the effects of the disease to return to normal life.
The so-called Great Barrington declaration, signed by leading experts from the universities of Oxford, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Cambridge, Sussex and York, suggests herd immunity as a way forward.
The declaration states: "The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to coronavirus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk.
"We call this focused protection."
It says current lockdown policies are having "devastating effects on short and long-term public health".
The negative impact of lockdowns listed include lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health - which the declaration claims will lead to greater excess mortality in years to come, hitting working class people and young people most.

I left my ‘home’ in Mexico, Ex Pat English Teacher and for the last 14 days enjoyed Mexicos GREEN rainy season last days. We stopped in Morelia, Guadalajara, Lake Chapala, San Blas. Had some symtoms of rash, discomfort, dryness of mouth but came on. We went from California to Tulsa, and just to be safe, went to get checked. We tested positive ofr the Yuhan China Flue called COVID. My doctor chatted with me on FB, and told me to get in, he said, YEP< you have it.. What are you taking, your symptoms are REAL calm. I said I take the Trump pills 2 times a week, I drink alkalinated water, take ZINC, and watch comedy movies. A Merry HEAART does good like a medicine. He said, it worked. Now take 2 Hydrocloxyquinine pills twice a day, go to a hotel, when the fever breks get tested and you are good to go. We have to report you to CDC and your data will say Cov id came from Mexico. Like Donald Trump says, this is easy, a piece of cake, FORGIVE, don’t get MAD, don’t watch Cuomo on CNN and get your knickers in a wad and scream the sky if salling. how many times have you hear the main stream news talk about how to get your Auto Immune system up to snuff and so you are RAMBO and you take on the virus and win.
Herd Immunity is the only sensible option to proceed forward....
My Governor, Ron DeSantis I think has finally seen the light and opened everything back up. 100% capacity on Restaurants and no enforcement of mask requirements...
In NYC they are shutting down entire areas of the city because the infection rate topped 3%, here in Florida we are still above that but we are moving forward while still protecting our senior citizens...
I went out to lunch yesterday with my wife, to a nice Italian Restaurant we frequent often, a sign on the door read, “100% Occupancy, Masks Optional”, gave me hope that we are slowly returning to normal....

This is science. But CNN and even Youtube, act like it does not exist.
The resistance of many to embracing the concept of “herd immunity” is not surprising. It isn’t just the conflict between a non-battlefield medical point of view that means everyone must be saved all the time everywhere and an executive view that choices must be made (more of a battlefield triage) and that the choice between destroying an economy and/or industry and creating misery on a large scale due to poverty and hunger outweighs the number of lives that might be saved by draconian measures.
I have been writing lately of the unpleasant tendency in our society (fostered almost entirely by the Left) to REQUIRE all people be “safe” all the time, in everything.
What you eat. You can’t eat things that are bad from you. Outlaw sugary drinks. Tax alcohol and tobacco. Mandate nutrition information.
What you see. You can’t see a statue. You can’t see a flag. You can’t watch a video someone else doesn’t agree with. You can’t view a sign that offends someone.
What you hear. Hearing hateful or stupid people is discouraged and outlawed. De-platform those whose opinions are thought to be bad. Shut down campus discourse at a lecture. People cannot have their feelings hurt, no matter if what hurts them is the truth.
What you do. Don’t drive without a seatbelt. Wear a helmet. Ban monkey bars. Make safety regulations so onerous that products become so expensive people won’t buy or use them.
It is all interrelated.
But most of all, it becomes a Manichean choice between accepting that WE as humans control EVERYTHING that happens to us, and accepting that Nature (God) has a hand it it.
This is a most difficult conflict for Leftists who believe Man is God.

You make complete sense. Unfortunately it sounds too much like “heard” immunity, and many people think that it’s just a rumor.
Well, I do believe that with the concept of herd immunity that greater numbers of people will succumb to this pathogen.
But I also believe that the future misery that awaits us due to lost jobs, poverty, stress, international conflict, and lawlessness because we have destroyed an economy and people’s lives and businesses far, FAR outweighs the increased number that will die from the virus.

Nice to hear. Afraid Pennsylvania isn’t fully in the clear statewide, but there will be hope.
There’s a group of people that are really at high-risk, and others who aren’t. We could advise those who are high-risk to take extra precautions and get the less vulnerable working.

Just to help everyone out the herd immunity way does not increase the number of deaths, just as flattening the curve does not decrease the amount of deaths. The overall number of deaths will be similar with both approaches, the duration though will be massively different.
Had we done what we normally do this covid would have been done and dusted months ago. All we did with our upending of society is to prolong the virus. I see no reason to allow a virus to run any longer than is necessary.

People will be far less alarmed if a million people die over five years rather than a million die in six months, and it is the perception that is driving things.
Exactly. That is what have been advocating since we began to get a real handle on what it was back in April 2020.
Protect the vulnerable, let the other people have what comes.
