...More than half -- 58% -- of voters in the canton, or state, of Geneva, voted to set the minimum wage 23 francs an hour, the equivalent of $25 an hour.

The initiative was backed by a coalition of labor unions, and is expected to affect about 6% of Geneva's workers when it takes effect Nov. 1.

UPI says it’ll only effect 6% of the city’s work force. Bull. It will negatively impact every member.

Why not make it $100 bucks an hour?

Not only does the cut the # employees in half, the remaining employed will have to work twice as hard.

Small biz should vacate this demented area.

Great, now Geneva will look like NYS.

True.

If you run a pub in town which marginally survives...this minimum wage ‘game’ will destroy any ability to hire people. You will run the pub yourself (with your wife), or shut it down in quick fashion.

So every business with entry level employees making $12.50 an hour will now lay off half its workforce, and the unemployed might end up getting the equivalent of $7.50 an hour.

I guess they don’t manufacture anything in Geneva, primarily a finance capital and service oriented economy.
25 bucks an hour would send the few manufacturing jobs they have left scurryng off to the third world

How is that possible? We cut the cheese freely here. I thought they just drilled the holes anyway.

So — if a teenager goes into a Mexican restaurant for free chips/salsa and drinks a water — it’s going to cost him $15... Way to drive down business and bankrupt it all! GENIUS !

“Why not make it $100 bucks an hour?”

They’ll get there eventually after they “discover” $25/hr is not enough. But don’t worry, before they get to $100/hr they will get to universal basic income to help people afford $25/hr. Unfortunately like everywhere else, many people who vote for leftist crap will move to lower cost areas rather than fix the problem they created.

I’m glad they did this in Geneva. I can hardly wait to read the stories of sky rocketing unemployment, businesses closing and starvation from unaffordable/lack of food. Dumbasses deserve what they vote for

“So — if a teenager goes into a Mexican restaurant for free chips/salsa and drinks a water....”

What Mexican restaurant? They’ll be lucky if a food truck is in the neighborhood. (PS - Waiting for the left to come up with a customer-chair-tax for restaurants. Coffee houses are exempt of course.)

Minimum wage: if you can’t produce enough, you’re punished with poverty.
How Communist.

$UBI = the new $0

If nobody has to work for it, it’s worthless.
Price of aggregate staple goods/services goes from $cost to $UBI+$cost.

True. Unions base their multiplier on the minimum wage...

Have you ever been to Geneva?
Average salary is 130K in US dollars.

It’s more expensive to rent in Geneva than NY or Paris.
It’s also not our country.
Look at it as a scientific experiment.
If it crashes and burns, it’s just another example for us to use.
