Dr. Anthony Fauci told Gov. Phil Murphy on Thursday that New Jersey is in “good shape” and “well positioned” compared to other states as the United States prepares for a second wave of the coronavirus this fall and winter, as long as the state continues to reopen its schools and economy “gradually, prudently, and carefully."
The man who has become America’s most famous doctor spoke with Murphy during a half-hour morning conversation on Facebook Live, discussing recovery from COVID-19, what lies ahead, and how soon a vaccine might be distributed.
Fauci praised the Garden State — one of the country’s early coronavirus hotspots — for how it has handled the pandemic. He noted that after seven months of restrictions, the state now has a “very low” baseline of COVID-19 cases, with daily positivity rates below 2% and a lower community spread compared to other regions in America.
“You suffered greatly, but then what you did is get the infection rate down,” said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a prominent member of the White House’s coronavirus task force.
“Even as we face the challenge of the fall and winter, you’re positioned to do two things: to continue to gradually, carefully and prudently open your economy in a careful way, (and) at the same time, to avoid the challenging difficulty of what happens when a lot of things go indoors versus outdoors,” he added.
"The thing that makes me very pleased and encouraged about New Jersey is that, notwithstanding that you got hit pretty badly, right now if you continue to carefully open the economy, you can get through the fall and winter,” Fauci continued.
Murphy said that’s “extremely encouraging.”
