All eyes on Romney, Grassley and Gardner as Supreme Court confirmation fight looms over the Senate
NYT ^ | Sept 21, 2020 | Emily Cochrane

Senators were set to return to Washington on Monday with a Supreme Court confirmation fight looming, as Republican leaders weighed the timing of a vote to fill the vacancy left by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

With President Trump vowing to name a replacement by the weekend, Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, was working behind the scenes to lock up the support he would need to proceed before Inauguration Day — and possibly before the Nov. 3 election.

Listening to Rush he stated the Constitutional requirement was senate confirmation, not a majority vote. Therefore if the rinos abstain the GOP can still confirm with a plurality.

Gardner is toast so nothing is gained by voting against the President.
Romney is now hated by most of the base and is following the path of Flake.
Grassley will do what he is told.

Romney will torpedo anything that will help Trump. Romney couldn’t care less about what happens to Americans, he’s got Ukraine and China business to protect.

Agree, it’s only Romney, and once Romney realizes that he can’t stop Trump (only two people announce non-support - Collins and murklousy) he will in fact vote for the nominee.

USSC nominations should be made immediately. These judges are supposed to be a separate branch so the death and resignations shouldn’t be used to effect elections.

So then with a "no" from Romney, we still have 50.

Although I could see Gardner screwing things up.

Mitt Romney has LONG BEEN G.S’s partner.
from Bain to the Ukraine.

America is doomed if that backstabber Romney
has any say.

Treasonous traitorous Romney is just waiting for another last minute opportunity to screw Trump. He’ll wait until he is sure Trump is just one vote shy of getting the nomination passed and then he’ll pull the Dims’ iron out of the fire for them and vote say he’s voting no.

Then I’ll become a “carpet bagger”, move to Utah and run against Romney next chance we get. LOL

As other FReepers pointed out this morning, there’s a big difference between voting “no” and abstaining ...

Murkowski & Collins have already said they won’t vote yes ... BUT Mitch might be able to talk them into just abstaining, so they can keep their promise

Romney is a proven backstabber (> the Impeachment), so count on him to actually vote no along with the Dems

That’s still 50-49 ... so Republicans could still lose Gardner OR Grassley (but not both), as long as they just abstain

Big Media is putting the pressure on Gardner right now

Romney has already said he won’t Vote for Trump in 2020.

And his wife is on tour with Michelle Obama.

2+2

Gardner will be promised a high paying GOP lobbying position, he'll support Trump. You're right about Romney, if he were smart he'd support the nominee, but he's a fraud on Soro's payroll.

Dear Senators Romney and Grassley:

Utah in 2016 went for Trump by 45.54% to 27.46%, and that’s with Evan McMullen getting 21.54% himself. Utah is a rabidly Republican state.

Iowa in 2016 went for Trump by 51.15% to 41.75%.

Senator Gardener: You’ve tied your campaign to President Trump - you cannot, at this late date, change your mind and have any hope of success. The Democrats in Colorado will not suddenly love you and vote against one of their own. Besides, if you want President Trump to come to CO and campaign for you and help you raise campaign contributions, you’ll need to have shown him that you are on his (and OUR) side.

All of you should thoroughly understand that a large part of the reason that YOUR constituents voted for Donald Trump (and you, in your last election) was to move the federal courts back toward their original purpose, that of INTERPRETING the Constitution, not re-writing it. You owe it to those constituents, and to the Party that has supported you for decades, to vote accordingly. That means voting for whomever President Trump nominates unless that person is CLEARLY unfit for the Supreme Court (and the odds of that are essentially zero). We have an election that will most likely be contested all the way up to the Supreme Court - and we simply cannot have even the theoretical chance of a tie at the highest level of court; there MUST be 9 Justices available to vote.

Nationally, the Republicans won the Senate in 2014 because the national mood was to move our politics in a more conservative direction - SPECIFICALLY INCLUDING THE FEDERAL COURTS. Republicans kept the Senate in 2016 with then-candidate Trump SPECIFICALLY laying out what he wanted for the federal courts, and they KEPT the Senate in 2018 with the public knowing that President Trump was nominating judicial conservatives/originalists to the various federal courts.

Oh, the Democrats won’t like that? Well, so what? First, they would do the same if they could; second, they don’t care about morals or traditions - they were ALREADY going to pack the Court and get rid of the filibuster before Justice Ginsburg died; this just provides them with a convenient excuse. Third, and finally, NO DEMOCRAT is going to vote for you - NONE, ZERO, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA - if you vote against the President’s nominee - not if that vote is before the election or after it. Understand that they do NOT love you, and there is literally nothing that you can do to change that. The experience of Senator McCain in running for President in 2008 should have taught that to every Republican - he was the media’s darling, the Democrats’ favorite Republican...until he dared to become the Party’s nominee, and then he became the Devil incarnate.

Each of you were elected for a wide variety of reasons, but among the most important was to keep our courts from becoming a rubber stamp for the liberal or Leftist policies of the Democrat Party, and to begin to move our Judiciary back toward faithfully and logically interpreting the Constitution according to its actual words and original intent. For any of you to NOT support the President’s nominee would be a betrayal of your constituents, your promises to the voters of your state, and of the principles that you have claimed to follow for your entire poltical career. Don’t be swayed by the biased media - do your duty as men and as Republicans representing those voters who put you where you are today.
