CORONAVIRUSSweden Close To Victory Over Coronavirus; Never Had A Lockdown Or Mask Mandate
summit news ^ | 8 September, 2020 | Steve Watson

As the rest of Europe and the world remains under the grip of draconian rules and the threat of new lockdowns, Sweden, which allowed its citizens to remain free throughout the entire pandemic, has pretty much declared victory over the coronavirus.

The country now has one of the lowest infection rates on the planet, and it’s difficult not to admire how it has handled the past year, with no strict lockdown or compulsory face mask rules. All businesses, schools and public places remained open in Sweden for the duration.

“Sweden has gone from being the country with the most infections in Europe to the safest one,” Sweden’s senior epidemiologist Dr. Anders Tegnell commented to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

“What we see now is that the sustainable policy might be slower in getting results, but it will get results eventually,” Tegnell clarified.

“And then we also hope that the result will be more stable,” he added.

Tegnell previously warned that encouraging people to wear face masks is “very dangerous” because it gives a false sense of security but does not effectively stem the spread of the virus.

“The findings that have been produced through face masks are astonishingly weak, even though so many people around the world wear them,” Tengell has urged.

Last week, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control confirmed Sweden’s drop in infection rate, with only 12 cases per million, compared to 18 in neighbouring Denmark and 14 in nearby Norway.

At the peak of the Sweden’s outbreak, it was seeing 108 new infections per million people, as it pursued a “herd immunity” strategy.

The figures also show that out of 2500 randomly selected and tested people in Sweden, none tested positive, compared to 0.9 percent positive in April, and 0.3 percent in May.

Ya but they didn’t have a major election coming up that would change the course of the entire world.

So Sweden’s daily deaths are below Denmark’s and Norway’s now. That’s a significant milestone. Going to be interesting to see what happens when these other nations open up.

Clever PR by the Swedes to dub their approach “sustainable”.

I like what Sweden did in terms of a risk-based approach to the economy and distancing etc., and I like Dr Agnell more than Fauci.

But this declaration is comparable to Cuomo taking a victory lap. Sweden has the 13th highest national per capita fatality rate. Indeed, they were on par with NYS in terms of killing the elderly.

SE's second quarter GDP didn't decline as much as other countries, which is a good thing.

So go ahead, this is something to celebrate...but the wake of death shouldn't be ignored.

Sweden does not have a media focused on hysteria and tearing down their leader at every opportunity.

With hindsight, every nation may wish they had made some different decisions, but two facts are absolute for me regarding this virus and our reaction to it.

Our media sucks. Absolutely sucks. The panic, chaos, and hysteria model of our media is really hurting our nation and removing our ability to react rationally to adverse events. This type of sensationalized news coverage throws the nation into tachycardia and allows wannabe dictator governors and mayors to exert control over their citizens.

China sucks. China deliberately foisted this thing upon us and too few seem to care. By shutting down domestic travel within China from Wuhan yet allowing international travel to continue while telling us through the WHO that we had nothing to fear this was clearly a deliberate act.

The good news is that Sweden could debunk the whole panic that there is no natural immunity, or that herd immunity comes only at a terrible cost of life

Foundations for the population lockdowns in all the Five Eyes countries

Regarding Sweden COVID-19 “victory,” if I understand correctly, low second peak death rate in Sweden is because virus killed all high risk people in first peak. But isn’t that arguably a pyrrhic victory?

Corrections, insights welcome.

Sweden and New Jersey have similar populations. NJ where I live with a tight lockdown had a peak death rate per million in lare April of 300 averaged over 7 days. It then dropped to near zero now. Sweden had a peak 7 day average of 100 in late April and has declined to zero recently, with limited precautions and little disruption to its economy.

The curves are similar in shape but the death total is 3X in NJ. Nursing home mismanagement was a factor but it also could be that lockdowns themselves caused some of it. It certainly didn’t help and the death toll on small business has been horrible.

Farr’s Law holds too. The virus will run its course regardless of what we do.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

Yesterday 267 people died of WuFlu in the US, if that number were only 3 lower, that would have been the lowest death count since March 24th.

Dr. Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s senior epidemiologis: "...encouraging people to wear face masks is 'very dangerous' because it gives a false sense of security but does not effectively stem the spread of the virus. The findings that have been produced through face masks are astonishingly weak, even though so many people around the world wear them.”

As another FReeper said the other day, "Where are the mask double-blind studies with placebo?" There is very little scientific data on mask efficacy at preventing disease spread.

“189,283 deaths”

BUT, we know that most of those were in people with serious co-morbidities. CDC issued the qualifying statement that only 10,000 deaths were PURE COVID and the balance were COVID + Something Else.

I wonder if that holds in Sweden, as well.

Yes, we had people who were worried here on FR. I think many of us reacted to the weeks of uncertainty by expressing our fear and anxiety. I am still worried about my parents, in-laws, and our centurion grandmother. They are all in the highest risk group although I have confidence in the HCQ treatment if they begin to exhibit any symptoms.

The American media did us a great disservice in their coverage of this virus from the start. The doom doctors did the same in the daily briefings although I am glad Trump did them so everyone heard the same thing he was hearing.

The media continue this today by not reporting good news (even from the doom doctors), but I would cut some of our fellow FReepers slack. Everyone’s perspective of this was different and based on their own experience and it will likely remain that way even as we admit mistakes were made.

I suppose it is baked into the cake at this point, but I don’t have any anger with those FReepers who were concerned and had a different view than you, me, or anyone else.

The numbers still end up the same whether it’s drawn out or more acute.

The “lockdown” was always only to “flatten the curve” to reduce the number of hospitalization at one time so the system was not overwhelmed.

At the time when 1200 or so died here in WA, Gov. Inslee shut down the whole state of 7.5 million putting people out of work and businesses closing; and the UE checks still haven’t gone out to a lot of folks and their website keeps crashing.

Sweden has the 13th highest national per capita fatality rate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, in May Sweden had the 6th highest. So their ranking has been dropping and likely will continue to drop. The argument has always been that Sweden’s approach would be proven in the longer term.
An interesting graph would be Sweden’s per capita fatality rate ranking versus time.
Also worth noting that unlike Cuomo, Sweden’s leaders have admitted that they blew it as far as the elderly.
