Texas Governor Greg Abbott says he’s considering state control of Austin’s police department

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Thursday that he is reviewing legislation that would remove control of the Austin Police Department from the capital city, and place them under state authority.

Abbott’s tweet is the latest attempt by the GOP to protect police from defunding as Austin became the first Texas city to vote in favor of shifting financial resources in the wake of the Blake Lives Matter protests, which have erupted across the nation in response to police brutality against Black Americans.

“This proposal for the state to takeover the Austin Police Department is one strategy I'm looking at,” Abbott tweeted Thursday. “We can't let Austin's defunding & disrespect for law enforcement to endanger the public & invite chaos like in Portland and Seattle.”

I would prefer to have the a sane city government in charge of the police, but Austin voters have elected 100% lunatics.

When I was at UT Austin in the 1990s there was a city councilman whose previous job was a homeless guy on the street. He’d been elected when a bunch of UT students wrote his name in. He didn’t even know he was running. Surprisingly, or perhaps not considering it was Austin, he became one of the better members of the city council.

Oregon could use Abbott to pull the Portland police force from the cowards running that city government and restore order to the city

It would allow Abbott to flush the ranks and brass of the worst of the leftists in APD.

Revoke “home rule” for Austin.

I like your handle. My sister-in-law and family lived in Dalhart for many years.

So would that mean that the state would fund the police and not the city? That sounds exactly like what Austin is wanting to do.

....I’m not sure how this would play out....I am not a lawyer, having found honest employment in all my years in the work force, but your comment about lunatics is right on the money....”Keep Austin Wierd!” is the popular slogan there...as I believe I have noted previously, there are untold thousands of new jobs coming to this area, and the Austin city leaders [sic] want to defund, if not abolish, their police force...!!?? absusrd....that’s we we live in the suburbs.....!! very conservative and we like it just fine....

Unfortunately, in the Austin city budget, money will move from funding a legitimate government purpose to virtue signalling projects, some of which are not only wasteful, but harmful in other ways as well.

Years ago Mohave County, AZ tried to wrangle control of Colorado City from it’s corrupt form of law enforcement which forced young girls to stay in a town where they were being forced to marry old men. You’d think this would be a no brainer.. But alas... the State told us NO.

To manage any city whose leadership is communist, one must take control of the Police and the Prosecuting. One without the other results in quagmire.

I saw a post here on FR claiming that the state has already cut payments to Austin but I don't know the details. In any case, the Department of Public Safety is going to be funded. If they become overworked, that will be a problem. Like if DFW, Houston, and San Antonio all decided to defund police.

I wonder if the state has the ability to rescind the city charters?

Isn’t that true....everyone has driven those long panhandle stretches

As a long haired southern Boy with no AC in the early 70s we’d leave lat dusk from Jackson Mississippi and be eating breakfast somewhere between Dumas Dalhart or Texline or even Clayton NM

Many places has great Tex mex breakfasts ...a shamrock near Texline I remember or a cafe in Clayton by the Best Western

By that afternoon we were camping near Trinidad or Walsenberg and Blanca Peak

Man I loved this camping and climbing trips then to escape the heat of Dixie

In Texline it was still yes ma’am and sweet tea

Clayton ....it was a new world ....I had kin in Santa Fe

Arizona was oddly more southern. Than New Mexico back then

Yes I love dumas name....hell im tempted to head out......wish I could.....Amarillo by morning ...lol....it’s forty all the way from Nashville

I’m only 62 but of my compadres from then it’s only two of us left

There is precedent for the state to take money from the city to fund other projects... So they might not get more money freed up in the budget.

I don’t want the state to try to control everything. But public order has to be Job One, and while Austin has not sunk to the level of Portland and Seattle yet, it’s on the way there.

Abbott is working off of the Jeff Sessions Management Playbook.

Please make Austin like the rest of Texas.

When will Governor Abbott resign?

"... the Blake Lives Matter protests, which have erupted across the nation in response to police brutality against Black Americans."

That is pure propaganda....

JOSEPH GOEBBELS REICH MINISTER OF PROPAGANDA

Make no mistake, there would be no police "brutality" (MSM's words) if when a policeman tells you to stop, that person complies with the order being given. Being drugged out out or stoned is NO EXCUSE. BLM is lawless - They are trying to make martyrs out of violent men, why are these thugs allowed to continue intimidating Americans....let there be consequences for these lawbreakers and those who encourage them in print and in $$$.

Southeastern New Mexico, especially around Hobbs, is an extension of the Permian Basin, both geographically and culturally. Northeastern New Mexico, not so much. Arizona had a lot of Southern settlers in the early days. The Tombstone troubles were between Northerners like the Earps and Southerners like the Clantons.
