Iron Chef Stephanie Izard To Lay Off Hundreds In Chicago
Patch ^ | 9-2-20 | Jason Addy

More than 270 workers are set to lose their jobs at the award-winning chef's restaurants this month due to the coronavirus.

CHICAGO, IL — Hundreds of workers at Iron Chef Stephanie Izard's restaurants in Chicago are set to lose their jobs later this month.

The companies that operate Izard's Girl & The Goat, Duck Duck Goat and Little Goat Diner notified Illinois officials in July that each plan to lay off dozens of restaurant workers starting Sept. 20.

According to notices filed with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, 96 employees at Little Goat Diner face permanent layoffs, along with 55 at Girl & The Goat and 42 at Duck Duck Goat. Each of the restaurants cited the coronavirus as the reason for laying off workers.

Cabra Cevicheria, a Peruvian restaurant launched in April 2019 as a collaboration between Izard and the Boka Restaurant Group, is also set to lay off 85 workers, according to the notices.

All four restaurants are located in Chicago's West Loop. Duck Duck Goat and Cabra operate out of Fulton Market, while Girl & The Goat and Little Goat Diner are both located in the 800 block of West Randolph Street.

Under the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act — better known as the WARN Act — companies must notify the state when they plan mass layoffs or closures.

The 278 employees from Izard's restaurants are among more than 18,000 Illinois workers who were laid off, temporarily furloughed or notified of impending layoffs during July. In almost all cases, companies cited "COVID-19" as their reason for laying off workers.

Boka Restaurant Group cofounder Kevin Boehm, who was also listed as the spokesperson for Izard's restaurants, did not immediately respond Wednesday to Patch's request for comment about the layoffs.

Can't keep staff on forever if you can't serve your customers. Working at 25% capacity might require a 75% cut in employees, if you can stay in business.

Non-sustainable run-rate at 25% capacity. This is the tip of the iceberg and is already in full-stride for the smaller eateries. Small businesses everywhere are getting decimated.

This is undoubtedly going to cost them in November. It is one thing to be “down with the cause” because it is chic or cool. It is a different story when your chic politicians really wreck your life.

They have a different view, in my opinion. I think they’re hoping for as much chaos and down economy as they can create. The hope is that people who lost their jobs, will blame the current administration, and look to big government daddies to save them.

Gee, that was unexpected. /s

Well she better be paying the remaining staff a “livable wage” of at least $15/hr.

“Small businesses everywhere are getting decimated.”

The goal.

Only big chains will remain, with their woke management easily directed/manipulated by government and new gov reg’s for social rules, customer monitoring, employee behavior...

How many windows do the restaurants still have? It’s not very appetizing sitting behind plywood in the window frames.

“Can we get a table with a view please?”

Chicago is a huge town for Corporate entertainment. Some of the big businesses there invite clients from all over the world to visit their HQ and then go out for fine dining. I’ve been there many times for this kind of thing.

That, is DEAD. I have in fact notified several companies that I can no longer attend events in places where safety is a serious concern.

Chicago is in for a very ugly downward spiral. In fact, the company that I last visited there has moved HQ to Texas, and is rapidly removing all ops from Chicago.

I’ve been to Girl and the Goat. I think the reservation waiting list back when I was there in 2018 was about 3 months.

Laying off so many workers likely means they are NOT reopening.

Restaurant entrepreneurs are the hardest working people I know. To see them getting hammered like this is so very sad.

“Restaurant entrepreneurs are the hardest working people I know.”

My wife and I both worked food service in college at fast paced restaurants. We both agree one of the hardest jobs we had. Physically and emotionally draining.

Kitchen Confidential by Bourdain is excellent. Chefs are under huge pressure. Food has to be right and putting out 150-200 dinners per hour at times. Can’t remember the exact numbers but many.

Let's start calling a spade a spade instead of blaming this euphemistic corona virus causing these closings and layoffs.

These people are losing their jobs, not because of the virus but because of colossal bad decisions by local politicians and their so-called health experts in their local governments.

These restaurant closings were overt decisions made by the government picking winners and losers. And we all know how that always works out.

There are locales in other states where restaurants have opened back up or at least allowed them to do business again. Keeping the places closed or only allowing them to operate at 25% of capacity is a death knoll by design.

They have shot themselves in the collective foot.

Girl & Goat - Little Goat Dinner insanely over priced. Plus all staffed by the woke crowd. White Males over 50 not welcomed at any of these “hip” restaurants.
