It’s back-to-school season, but millions of students won’t be going back to the classroom. Teachers are fighting tooth and nail to prevent reopening public schools for in-person learning — in the name of safety. Yet our just-released study suggests that these reopening decisions have more to do with influence from teachers’ unions than safety concerns.
In New York City, the Department of Education’s proposal to offer families a hybrid of part-time in-person instruction and remote learning starting Sept. 10 met with fierce opposition. Teachers’ groups poured into the streets to protest the plan, including with props such as fake body bags. Mayor de Blasio pushed back the opening after threatened strikes.
It’s happening nationwide. New data published at Education Week indicate that 78 percent of the nation’s 50 largest public districts aren’t planning to reopen with any in-person instruction.
Using data on the reopening decisions of 835 public districts covering about 38 percent of all students enrolled in K-12 public schools in the country, our study finds that school districts in places with stronger teachers’ unions are much less likely to offer full-time, in-person instruction this fall.
For example, our models indicate that school districts in states without right-to-work laws are 14 percentage points less likely to reopen in person than those in states with such laws, which prevent unions from requiring membership.
A 10 percent increase in union power is associated with a 1.3 percentage-point lower probability of reopening in person. In Florida, for example, 79 percent of 38 school districts in the Education Week dataset are planning to offer full-time in-person instruction to all students. However, in New York, a state with much stronger teachers’ unions, none of the 21 school districts included in the dataset are planning to do the same.

True. The private secular schools are open. The Catholic schools are open. The NEA supports destruction and would happily undermine the education of the nation’s children for political leverage.
The unions are more about hurting kids than helping teachers.
As a governor or mayor you can’t close restaurants and gyms for “public safety” reasons, and then expect to have any credibility when you say it’s safe to open schools.

Interestingly, I saw data awhile back sating that the majority of public school teachers in urban areas such as Chicago send their children to private schools.
The only solution to the inner city public school problem is a voucher system. Will it ever happen? Probably not. Those who can afford it vote with their feet by relocating.
They are controlled by the unions politicians and their agenda

I literally DO NOT CARE if it’s the unions preventing the re-opening of schools, all I want is for our kids to NEVER have to step into those horrific institutions again. And now, they’ll even be much worse, with BLM brainwashing and intimidation added to their stew.

I agree, maybe 20 or even 10 years ago, there were a few holdouts. But they’re gone, the Left now owns the schools 100% (other than the public schools that my kids go to, course*).

Don’t stop with the unions. Follow the money and shake the money tree and watch the world globalists come tumbling out. The globalists need to be taken out before the whole world is trashed. Ask yourself, how do you deal with your attackers in times of war? It’s obvious to any sentient being that the globalists have declared war on America. Time to wake up. Wars are no longer fought with beans and bullets and mass armies in frontal assaults. Today, the enemy, the social engineers, the elite cowards, hide in the shadows with their bags of money.
Cut off their paychecks and let’s see if the teachers want to sit at home.
