Barr tightens rules on surveillance of political candidates
Associated Press ^ | September 1, 2020 | Eric Tucker

The Justice Department announced new restrictions Tuesday on how it conducts any secret national security surveillance of candidates for federal office or their staff.

The restrictions, announced by Attorney General William Barr in a pair of memos, are part of broader changes to the Justice Department’s surveillance procedures implemented in response to problems detected during the 2016 investigation into ties between Russia and President Donald Trump’s campaign.

Coming just two months before the 2020 election, the changes are designed to ensure that law enforcement officials have to clear additional hurdles before pursuing the same type of surveillance as was conducted on a former adviser to Trump’s 2016 campaign. […]

One new policy would require the FBI to consider briefing a federal candidate or staffer that the person was being targeted by a foreign power before applying for a warrant from the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to eavesdrop on their communications. …

Wow! Just what we needed, a new policy! The jackass, The problem is not the policy, the problem was -criminal- behavior on the part of the FBI and CIA. And nobody has been prosecuted.

More rules for the Democrats to ignore. They haven't paid a price for their criminal behavior the past 4 years, so they aren't going to worry about a few more rules. And a Democrat AG will just rescind those rules, anyway, so this is pretty meaningless.

Problems?

What about criminal activity by top-level FBI officials?

I read this as protection for foreign born candidates and same for their staff. Including those already seated.

My very first thought. Internal rules are useless.

Consider? As in, we considered but decided against it?

It shuts the barn door. Now go round up all the animals and euthanize them.

Just in time to protect Biden and Harris who are colluding with domestic terrorists.

Or am I being too cynical?

Barr is laying the foundation to say the spying on Trump wasn’t illegal. Good luck to the sunshine pumpers on spinning this one.

Not necessary. The all hate Trump at Main DOJ and won’t be lifting a finger in support of the Rule of Law as long as it benefits POTUS.

This is stupid.
How can more ‘rules’ change a dam thing when the FBI is willing to break laws with ZERO consequence?
The ‘heros’ in the FBI tried to steal the votes of 63 million and manufacture false charges against anyone they chose to destroy and Barr adds a few ‘rule changes’.
The ‘tree of liberty’ is almost beyond saving at this point.
