One statistic should frighten Democrats more than any other: Trump is diligently chipping away at the Dems’ most reliable demographic, causing a shift that could wipe out the party.

One of the things that conservatives noted approvingly was the way that the Republican National Convention reached out to blacks. For too long, Republicans had a defeatist attitude about black voters. Even though Republican policies manifestly benefitted blacks, Republicans believed that the black bias in favor of Democrat candidates was insurmountable. Trump never believed that, and it’s his faith in black voters that may be paying off. A post-convention poll shows that 24% of registered black voters support him.

We all know how black voters switched their allegiance from the Republican party – an allegiance created during Reconstruction – to the Democrat party, beginning during the Depression. By the 1960s, even though the Democrat party was the party of slavery and Jim Crow, and even though more Democrats voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 than did Republicans, the fact that a Democrat president presided over its passage seemed to cement blacks permanently to the Democrat party. That’s why, for more than 50 years, blacks give around 90% of their votes to Democrat presidential candidates.

Democrat policies haven’t been good for blacks. Instead, Democrats have pushed welfare-based policies like a drug dealer pushes heroin. The user knows the stuff is bad for him but just can’t say no. Regardless of the facts on the ground, though, the Democrats still consistently managed to convince American blacks that Republicans, the party of abolition and Reconstruction, were invariably the second coming of the KKK.

Trump, however, was not from the Republican old guard and saw no reason not to make a play for black voters. In 2016, his greatest efforts were not yet directed at blacks but, as he rightly asked blacks while outside of Lansing, Michigan, back in August 2016, “What do you have to lose by trying something new,

While Trump has made some moves to chip away at the black vote, the biggest problem for the Democrats is that they followed up Barack Obama with two candidates who might be even less inspiring for black voters than they are for other demographics. At least Hillary had the “I’m with her” thing to go on. Biden is about as big of a dud as there is. He’s such a bad choice that I’m amazed he’s not a Republican. He’s a stiff of McCain or Romney proportions.

Trump is fairly popular with black men ... who don’t vote. Black women will vote for Biden in huge numbers, but will they turn out? It’s going to take a lot of cheating.

interestingly....I think Trump has effectively enacted a lot of what Jack Kemp wanted to do.

He was ahead of his times, I think. No one really saw things the way he did once he was gone....certainly not paul ryan who became just a little toady for the left.

In many ways, Kemp sort of transcended the traditional left/right divide, and established a new way of right thinking.

He was a good man, and strangely, for an ex-pro athlete, he was one of the more well-read elected officials.

I think Trump the great American sledgehammer has knowingly or not, enacted much of Kemp’s program (and even more so, with prison reform) and I think it’s amazing.

I have a different view of why Republicans never explicitly sought black votes. They were purists and thought reaching out to a racial group was racist.

True that on the practical level they also thought they wouldn’t get many black votes. However, they never asked for “white votes” either.

However, this violated a very basic principle of politics, which is always ask people for their vote.

Trump just came in and said screw that, let’s start telling black people why they should vote for us.

It’s just Trump being Trump. He does not believe in defeatism or the words, it can’t be done. Or, any such concept. He believes firmly in, where there’s a will there’s a way.

Trump and the black vote is a Nixon goes to China moment.

Trump isn’t a “traditional Republican” (whatever that is) by any stretch of the imagination, so there is less of a “stigma” to support him than any other Republican. That gets them in the door.

But you can’t “bait & switch” them. It’s up to the future candidates to keep them — or to convince them to be candidates themselves.

Basically, I hope that liberal Republicans (the Bush wing, et al) don’t squander this opportunity as they did with Conservatives and the Tea Party movement when they realized they were being used and stopped showing up to “unite” a party.

oh, yes, totally. Not suggesting that Trump knew anything about Kemp’s policy proposals. Just saying that they resemble them, and the results are what Kemp, in fact, predicted.

Two great New Yorkers!

Fascinating, really. I’ll bet Kemp was not a big fan of the USFL...but I don’t know. In any event, Trump is killing it!

I have no doubt that Trump will outperform his 16 performance with black voters... he scored a relatively poor 8%, which was below average for a republican candidate.

However color me skeptical that he’s going to get some of the numbers folks are throwing around. Those huge numbers are when folks look at the subset of larger polls, which because of the small sample size have huge margin of errors.

If you sample 40 random people and get 25% approval you have a huge margin of error... but folks latch onto that number as though it’s representative and it’s not.

If Trump is getting 24% approval among blacks you wouldn’t need a poll to see it. It would be obvious on the ground. Thats a 300% increase over 16 and a nearly 240% increase over typical GOP support in the modern era.

You would see that kind of shift easily on the ground. You would not need polls to show it.

I do believe Trump will do better than 16 but I don’t see him getting anything near 20% support. Hell honestly all he needs is about 13-15% support and no democrat can win.

We will see come November but I am highly skeptical of folks running around closing 20+% approval of Trump among AA voters

I’d be surprised if Trump gets much above 10%, but it will be a slightly higher percentage of a smaller turnout. 15% would be an amazing result. He will probably do a lot better with black voters in places he will win anyway. Still, chipping away at that number is good. He just needs to win.

Lots of dead people and fake people will be voting in Detroit and Philly.

Kemp is NOT a good model to follow. He wanted to make common cause with Calypso Louie Farrakhan.

I for one found the parade of sane, rational black people speaking at the GOP Convention highly refreshing.

Generally TV only shows you the far-left politicized loons.

Ryan, believe it on not was a Kemp understudy. I expected better of him.

Back in 1988 I had an official picture of Kemp hanging up at my laboratory workbench, just as a conversation starter, when he was running in the primaries.

Some may have a memory of one of those primary debates when Kemp declared straightforwardly -- "If George Bush is elected President, the Reagan Revolution is dead."

How right he was.

Why would you have expected better? Remember Kemp's lame performance against Gore in 1996?

This is precisely why the white Left lunatics have become so enraged...they are ALWAYS angry, but this behavior goes miles away from anger.

They will just have to learn to live with the changes.

We had to.

I would rather characterize this as an outreach to the people who traditionally have a rough time in life. That can be the terminally sick who are told to smoke pot while they slowly die. That can be any economically disadvantaged black, brown or white, who grows up in a very poor area without good schools. That can be any group where too many of the adults are in prison for low level non-violent law breaking. Fatherless homes cover white, black and brown homes.

The policies President Trump has helped implement are the outreach, because all people who see positive results in their lives, coming from his policies, are happy to shout their stories to the world. Someone who’s life is improved doesn’t care whether the policy is from a law, or from an Executive Order signed because Congress putzes around too much.

This is not a Black Outreach; it is an Outreached Hand Up. Tim Scott’s story about his mentor, who expanded Tim’s vision of his place in the world and what he could accomplish, is the day by day outreach that Conservatives do. A Thousand Points of Light is not just a slogan.
