N.J. teen who held Black Lives Matter protest gets hit with $2,500 bill for police overtime

When Emily Gil learned of the lack of affordable housing in Englewood Cliffs — and the fact she believes Black residents are priced out of her Bergen County hometown — she felt an urgent need to enact change. The 18-year-old, who graduated from Bergen County Technical School in June, organized a small, peaceful Black Lives Matter protest last month, she says. “Englewood Cliffs has dodged affordable housing requirements for 40-plus years,” Gil told NJ Advance Media. “I find that unacceptable.” Four days after the July 25 rally, Gil received a hefty bill for police overtime. “Please promptly forward your payment to the borough in the amount of $2,499.26 for the police overtime caused by your protest,” Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mario M. Kranjac wrote in a letter. The letter provided to NJ Advance Media states that since Gil had refused to meet with officials ahead of the protest, the borough was left scrambling to provide security. “Your lack of notification left the borough with little time to prepare for your protest so that the police department and department of public works could ensure that everyone would be safe,” the letter states. Gil explained that borough officials had requested she meet with them in person but she declined due to concerns over the coronavirus. She offered to meet with them on Zoom instead but they didn’t accept, she said. “They kept pushing (an in-person meeting) and then they stopped responding to me,” she said. Gil said only 30 to 40 people attended the rally, caused no disturbances and picked up their own trash. In an email, Gil complained about the overtime bill to Englewood Cliffs Police Chief William Henkelman. Henkelman wrote back that he had notified the borough of the “extensive preparation required and the additional staffing that was needed, including overtime

And another snowflake learns their is no such thing as a free lunch. Besides, Englewood Cliffs is a bit upscale, surely with ber privilege she's oh so guilty of, $2500 should be chump change

Try that shtick in Avon or Greenwich, Connecticut, and you will wind up down more than $2,500.

She’s so concerned about CoVid, yet had no concern about having a protest?

So she wants “affordable housing” to be built in her area so she can #### her mother and father by having the price of their house plummet.

If she’s THAT open minded and woke, I can pick her up (She’s not that far..45 minutes) and drop her off at the Park Row housing projects for the night.

She will immediately be offered somewhere to sleep..and the price will be the number of men she is forced to sleep with..or be beat up for refusing. Or worse.

Lived in those projects for a short time and drove a cab into that area too many times.

This is not an exaggeration.

I lost count of the number of white girls who I would take from “good” neighborhoods to go and get drugs in the projects there and Never come out.

That’s why they had to pay up front.

The ride was called a “crack and back”

But many times there was no “back”

White children..and today they are children until 40..especially girls..have no idea what danger is out there and what real life is really like.

Here’s a hint girls..It’s nasty as all #### and it won’t care about your ideals.

It will just swallow you whole and spit out your clothes.

This type of “billing after the fact” could equally be applied to conservative rallies. I do not think it is fair. We should be concerned about this type of abuse from the state. We could be next.

But don’t conservative rallies cooperate with local officials when we schedule such events? It sounds like she went rogue in setting up her protest March, and that is what caused her problems.

Of course , as always, if there is more to the story, I hope someone will educate us all.

Conservatives would not have refused to meet with them prior to the protest.

average home price in Englewood Cliffs NJ is over $1,000,000.

I lived a couple of miles from there for many, many years. No chance any affordable housing is ever built there. Just to give you an idea of property values in that area Eddie Murphy lived in the East Hill section and his home sold for over $12,000,000 in the mid 1980’s. The real estate taxes alone were over $200,000 annually.

Finally I doubt there is a single building lot available in that area.

This is a bogus charge from a department of thugs. Look past why she was protesting to the meat of it. 40 people, no trouble, cleaned up after themselves. That didn’t require overtime. And I’ll bet if you look at the pictures of the event you won’t even see any cops. They’re making stuff up.

A young white woman from Tallahassee organized a BLM “protest” in Crawfordville, about twenty minutes south of Tallahassee. About 100 people drove in to support her and around 150 locals showed up to counter protest. Most of the businesses closed and there was a heavy sheriff’s presence. The woman tried her best to cause violence, but the numbers and jeering crowd were against her. It broke up peacefully, in no small part because of the large counter protest. At the end her group drove away.
