Activists: Police killings of Latinos go unnoticed, underscoring racial history (Serious Barf Alert)

As national Black Lives Matter demonstrations grow, Latino activists are joining the multiracial protests while trying to draw attention to their deadly police encounters, some of which go back decades. Latino advocates and families of those killed by police say they aren’t trying to pull the focus away from Black lives but want to illustrate their own suffering from policing and systemic racism.

Activists say cases from Phoenix to Springfield, Massachusetts, show a pattern of police violence against Latinos like that against Black people. As with the killing of Black men and women, officers rarely face punishment in the deaths of Latinos. However, Latino cases seldom garner national attention, even when caught on video.

The lack of attention around encounters that go wrong between Latinos and police highlights a lack of knowledge among the general population about Latino history in the U.S. and racism endured in the American Southwest. It also brings attention to the backlash some Mexican Americans say they endure when trying to join the national conversation about race. So the cry of "systemic racism" is nothing more than an officer shooting in his own defense when threatened by a gun-wielding offender who is more than ready to take down a police officer.

The article cites Las Cruces, a NM city of 100,000 which for the most recent five year period has a police killings rate of 26.2 for every million residents (2-3 per year). That rate is the highest for any city in the nation according to the Washington Post.

But the article also mentions that Las Cruces is 60 percent Hispanic and that often police officers involved are also Hispanic. Not mentioned in the article is that often shootings result from armed drug dealers or users committing crimes ranging from assault to burglary to murder and whether under the influence or not are willing to shoot instead of surrender when confronted by officers.

Ryan Whitaker was just shot and killed by police for answering his door with a pistol in his hand and then complying with police.
