What happens when signatures on ballots don’t match the registration ballot? States that have had a long start-up period use computers to flag probable mismatches. Then it goes to 2 election judges, one from each party. They then separate ballots into 3 categories:
1. Probably not legitimate. (e.g., signed “Mickey Mouse”).
2. Probably legitimate (signatures seem substantially similar)
3. Unresolved ( remember, the ballots have the person’s legal name ON THE BALLOT sleeve. So this is about variance in style).
Standards are, obviously, full of subjectivity, this isn’t done in a few hours, or a few days, or in close races, even a few weeks. If you’re a lawyer with expertise in election law, you’re going to make a lot of money very soon. Lots of close racers are going to go to the Courts.
