China's massive Yulin Naval Base on Hainan Island is one of the greatest strategic interests in the region. It is home to China's nuclear ballistic missile submarine fleet—the backbone of its second-strike deterrent—as well as other submarines. It sits at the northern edge of the highly contentious South China Sea. To its east is the gateway to the open Pacific and Taiwan. The most intriguing feature of this facility is the mysterious submarine cave built into the side of a mountain that dominates the southern end of the installation. Although I have seen satellite images of the roadway barges removed from the opening, we have never seen one with a submarine actually using it, until now.

Hopefully the U.S. Navy has that base under Continuous surveillance. We need to park a couple of attack boats nearby just in case the ChiComs get foolish.
Caves, tunnels, tanks, silos, submarines - all confined space death traps. Ask Hitler, ask Saddam. Ask all the people that have died in warfare in one of those confined spaces.
The Chinese submarine cave would be a very nice way to knock out as many subs that could fit in there. You know darn well all the major intel agencies with eyes in the sky know the exact count at any given moment.

The surveillance was EXTENSIVE at least as far back as the mid 80s when I was still in.
Everything that leaves Hainan is tracked until it returns.
Unless China bought those Iranian inflatable decoy subs and are using them to distract from where the real subs are parked.

Death traps? I hope so. China, as I understand it, has hundreds of miles of underground tunnels to move around nuclear missles.
Was looking at a 12/12/2019 Google Earth image of the area, and is was lousy with subs in several areas and an aircraft carrier with SU-27 (or their version) on deck.
Quite a target.
