Anybody on this thread heard about the $570 million unemployment fraud in Washington state?

Yes - you read that correctly - $570 million!

Our state news media barely cover the story. They hide behind the pretext that writing about it will reveal key details of how the fraud was committed.

I assume that it was all federal money since no one in state government appears to be upset.

All we know is that “Nigerian gangs” may be involved. No arrests have been made that I know about.

What do Washington voters think?

Yawn.

A few weeks ago, Democrat Governor Inslee and our incumbent Democrat Attorney General both received more than 50% of the vote in our state wide “jungle primary.”

In the 70’s, the last time I was an employee, you were required to fill out 3 applications a week and you had to prove it to get your unemployment stipend, You had to GO to the Unemployment Office every WEEK!!, All Businesses with 25 or more employee’s were required to list their openings at the Unemployment Office for 2 weeks before they could look elsewhere. The unemployment office would do everything they could to match you with a JOB instead of GIVING AWAY Taxpayer Money . ALL Welfare required a Personal Visit to the Welfare Office to get your benefits every month,

I was running an Asphalt plant in NE Washington DC and had a steady stream of filling out the ‘I was looking’ cards.

Worst part was they would walk into my office and say ‘you not hiring are you’?

Asphalt Co, we were always ‘hiring’ so I would point to a truck coming out of the plant and tell him to go to the job and tell the foreman to call me.
99.99% of the time it was can’t today, will be in tomorrow...’Sign this?... Sure, tomorrow’
99.99% it was a no show.

Lest you think I was ‘hard on them’, I ALWAYS had a standing rule no matter where I worked...

“If a man shows up at 6 AM with his LUNCH, he has a job, sight unseen”

I learned how a Man is supposed to work at 18 when I worked on a rig in the oilfield for a year in the 70’s, hell if you took off both gloves for lunch you were fired, just in case something happened on the rig. I have made it a point to always be the first one on the job and last to leave my whole life.

Some one at EDD should be prosecuted for this.

Between Navy and me being me, if I arrive at work at the ‘designated time’, I am late...

I got the same memo from my parents growing up:

If you’re early you’re on time
If you’re on time you’re late
If you’re late you’re FIRED!!

That is it!!

I have a ‘dedicated’ pickup twice a week (same business, different locations) for businesses that don’t open till 0930. Even at my age when ‘they’ say see you first thing in the morning and then say we open at 9 or so, they get the ‘look’.
By 0900 I am seriously thinking about ‘lunch’ or midday ‘snack’.

Anyhoo on occasion - if I get ‘sent’ elsewhere - the Manager will call to see if I am OK if not there when she gets there at 0845 or so. (Old school has same work ethic)

Today’s ‘youngish manager’ tends to not show up till 0929 for an 0930 opening then is upset if a couple of people waiting to get in.

Of course they have their ‘Starbucks & Donut’ EVEN if on the occasion they may get hung up and not show till 0945 or so.

Like the food in the supermarket that just magically appears on the shelf or ‘in the back’ they somehow learned that the business doesn’t have to be manned until the time it says on the door.
