Ryan Whitaker Shot by Police for having a Gun in Phoenix, AZ – Video

May 21, 2020, at about 10:53 p.m, in Phoenix's Ahwatukee Foothills neighborhood, officers are responding to a noise complaint thinly disguised as a domestic violence incident. The complainant is desperate to get to sleep because he has to get up to go to work. He tells the dispatcher at 10:18 it is a domestic altercation. The exact time of the second call is not given, but the caller says it is a half-hour after the first call.

In the second call, the caller makes clear this is a noise complaint.  He is asked if this is a male and a female in a verbal. From what police have released of the call (includes  graphic video of the shooting) :

Complainant:

Yeah, and its getting really loud and they been doing it for the last hour. I gotta get it to work tomorrow, and I can't get no sleep.

These guys have been noisy constantly… Every time I come back, these guys are noisier than hell.  Always fighting.

Dispatcher:

Okay does it sound like it's escalated to anything physical or still just sound verbal?

Complainant:

Oh. It could be physical, I..I could say yeah if that makes anybody hurry up on, get over here any faster.

Dispatcher:

Anything to indicate it might be physical?

Complainant:

I hear slamming of doors and… I don't know. Somebody could be gettin' thrown into a door for all I know. But I hear all kinds of banging.

The police go to the apartment. Officers take up positions on each side of the door, well separated. One officer knocks on the door, and announces “Phoenix police”, in a slightly elevated voice.

It looks like a bad shoot. This is more shocking than the George Floyd case, after you have watched the body cam video in both cases.

The cops would not have shot him if he was black.

More criminal police in action. Never answer the door, never talk to the police, avoid them at all costs.

Did this guy die of a drug overdose like Saint Floyd did?

I think Ryan may have been “swatted”.

Sounds like a combination of swatting and a trigger happy cop.

Three shots in the back? Yeah, I’d say that was a bad shoot.

I believe the caller needs to be arrested for providing false information. Notice how there was no noise coming from the apt. when the police arrived. Also the police need to face charges here as the man was definitely complying with their requests and was not pointing his gun at them. Of course these are dangerous times, so I can’t totally fault the police, but seems like they did overreact to my eyes.

Agreed.

Of the countless stories we read on FreeRepublic, the first question that occurs to me is WHY do people respond to door-knocks or doorbell rings?

You’re more than a bit ignorant with that statement.

Back the blue my ass. Cops are parts of the problem. Even if this was a perfectly justified use of deadly force by the police, although it certainly appears to be nothing close, they ignored the guy as he lay there for 10 minutes,

Goons in blue.

If it was your son, brother or father, could you?

We can only be eternally-thankful that this tragedy was not magnified by the deceased having been black.

This was a career-ending shoot - potentially-criminal with associated consequences - and it was egregiously-wrong of APD to lie about the circumstances in public statements with full-knowledge that their officers were wearing body cams, apparently-ignorant of the facts before making such statements.

It was also egregiously-wrong of the shooter’s partner to lie about the circumstances, itself also potentially-criminal.

Agreed about the caller, but you’re granting much too much leeway to APD and the officers. This coming from a guy whose son is LEO.

This reminds me of the Daniel Shaver case four years ago in neighboring Mesa, Ariz. in which a cop killed an unarmed, innocent man. This got only minor media coverage, which wouldn't have been the case had the victim been black. The cop who pulled the trigger skated.

Three shots in the back?

Cop fired 3 times point blank and only hit him twice. He does not need to be a cop anymore.

He was a dumbass to open the door with no one visible through the peephole. Bravado got him killed by a rogue cop with poor training and probable bias of indeterminate origin (prolly a lib).

It is for this reason that I have steel security doors on my exterior doors. If I ever detect someone outside my doors - gumball lights or not - my first call after arming up is to 911. In any event, I will not willingly walk into a trap or a hornet’s nest, either potentially-deadly scenarios when those outside have the advantage.

Apartment buildings are inherently-dangerous to their occupants on a number of fronts. There’s a lesson in here for all from a number of standpoints.

“Has the officer who shot been trained to shoot every time they see someone with a gun in their hand?”

Too many times I’ve seen posters on this forum write words to the effect: “Never draw your gun unless you’re going to shoot.”

That propagates the idea that when you see a gun in someone’s hand they are going to shoot. That leads to shooting first to protect yourself.

Personally, I don’t see that, all else being equal, seeing a person merely holding a gun generates an immediate need to shoot them.

No, I am consistent in my thoughts. Note: I did not declare the police totally blameless. I merely said I cannot fault them totally. I also said they deserve some kind of punishment, for what I saw was compliance. However, compliance can quickly turn the other way, though I saw no evidence that was where it was heading.

Police are working blind when they enter into what has been reported as a violent domestic dispute. Then when one shows up at the door with a gun, the police expect the worse, because they don't know what the reality is or will be. That is why I don't totally blame the police. It's a thankless job with low pay in many places.
