I thought 2% still got Checks, but it’s only 1%.
My father got a paper SS check 8 years ago. But we had it changed to direct deposit.
My dad worked for the post office folks from the early 1960s to the early 1990s. An average of ten social security folks every single month (on his route) had a late check and this triggered them to time his delivery to the mail-box and they would try to haggle over this. My dad would try to explain that if it’s not in the bag...it hasn’t arrived yet.
For over twenty years, the Social Security check hasn’t been directly tied to postal delivery. These idiots serving as Senators and House members have been so out-of-touch with regular people....even their staff team are in the same state of confusion.
You can tell when the DNC issues their talking points. The rants from politicians and media all contain the same lies.

The other 4 were lost in the mail.
As well as the Veterans Administration and all other government agencies. The lack of security at the receiving end (unattended mailboxes) was almost as troubling as the problems within the Postal Service itself.

Not sure exactly how that works, but mine has been direct deposit for a long time. Since it is always available at the bank at the right time, I’d say that is very good evidence it does NOT depend on USPS, but is accomplished electronically.
Yep, hasn’t been true for over a decade. When my Uncle started collecting social security a few years ago he was FORCED to open a bank account (he was one of those types that never trusted banks). But they said that direct deposit is the ONLY way they make Social Security payments now.
All veteran’s benefits are direct deposit too.
Another Direct Deposit advantage: If your deposit day is on Saturday, you see the money on Friday! At least mine does.

and feds required direct deposit because the USPO had too many failures - lost checks, delayed delivery, stolen checks, etc. (old folks, like me, want our checks on time!!!
AUTO DEPOSIT WAS MANDATED SEVERAL YRS AGO. I’VE BEEN DRAWING DSSI SINCE I WAS 60.
At least 12. Going by when I started drawing DSSI, at 66 went regular SS.
