Dozens of Hong Kong citizens gathered in shopping malls across the city Tuesday to call for press freedom, one day after Hong Kong police raided the local Apple Daily newsroom and arrested its owner, Jimmy Lai, under the citys new national security law.
Lai, a Hong Kong media tycoon, is also a prominent pro-democracy figure in the city. He was arrested Monday along with nine other pro-democracy activists, news executives, and his sons for alleged offenses under the citys new national security law, including collusion with foreign forces, Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) reported.
Using the Telegram messaging app, organizers called for participants to gather at four separate malls across the city for a sing-along demonstration, or chanting of slogans in support of press freedom. According to the report, some chants, such as freedom be with me with an Apple a day, directly referenced Mondays raid of the Apple Daily newsroom.

Thank You my FRiend! :)
China couldn't care less.
China does not need rationality because it has no accountability, just like the Left here.
No chance Americans will care. We’re all racists, after all./s
They’ll care about worsening trade relations.
Well said~!
The Chinese press is no worse than the lying U.S. press.
Don’t forget we are all uninterested and ignorant of global affairs.
They are often one and the same.
The US press does voluntarily what the Chinese press is forced to do. US is worse.
Hell, the U.S. press is almost exclusively produced and directed by deep state.
It comes from taking hydroxychloroquine. Instant stupidity is the main side effect, unresponsiveness to anything but FNC, Rush, and Trump tweets./s
The Chinese press is no worse than the lying U.S. press.
Sadly you’re right.
They need to learn that they can maybe get the government to give lip service to freedom of the press, but unless the media complies, it’s all for nothing.
And then there’s big tech silencing the opposition if the government can’t/won’t.
The US press is whatever it is. Whores. Liars. Idiots. Take your pick. One thing I do know, though, and that’s that the Chinese Consulate is right next to the USS Intrepid museum in Manhattan (couldn’t find the exact address, but here’s the web site: http://newyork.china-consulate.org/eng/zlgxx/jgsz/), and they do not like even a minor show of conscience there. I once passed out poems I wrote about the Tian An Men Square Massacre of 1989. They were upset but polite. Nowadays, they probably have a goon squad waiting to beat up anyone who gives them guff. Up to you if you want to chance it.
I used to work in HK; prior to and shortly after British control. The people, at least then, had a great disdain for the PRC government. I mean everyone that I met in business who was willing to express an opinion after several drinks. They loved the idea of the American dream. They knew more about our constitution than most Americans. I hope to God that they fight and win their freedom. That is what is going to take. And if you haven’t recognized it yet, that’s what it is going to take here in America.
