Trump claimed that China would "own" the United States if Biden becomes president and that Americans "would have to learn to speak Chinese."
The president riffed on what he called his tough approach to China and the deterioration of his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping over the coronavirus pandemic during a morning interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, who is also a contributing opinion columnist for The Washington Post.
Hewitt noted that Trump's national security adviser Robert C. O'Brien had recently said that China would prefer Biden to win in November. Trump agreed that Beijing would rather deal with the presumed Democratic presidential nominee.
"Because they'll own the United States if he wins, and with me, they were having the worst year in 67 years because I tariffed the hell out of them," Trump said, before exaggerating the effect of his tariff war and the preliminary trade deal he reached with China in January, just before the virus began to affect daily life.
He also repeated allegations about Biden's son, Hunter Biden, reaping $1.5 billion from a Chinese investment fund, which the younger Biden disputes and which a Washington Post analysis found had no merit.
"Look, China will own the United States if this election is lost by Donald Trump. If I don't win the election, China will own the United States. You're going to have to learn to speak Chinese, you want to know the truth," Trump said. "And you'll have to learn it fast. They will own the United States."
The "speak Chinese" phrase echoes rhetoric Trump has used elsewhere that his critics say is racist, including routinely calling the coronavirus the "China virus," and twice publicly calling it the "Kung Flu."
