WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand announced on Tuesday it was shutting down its largest city, Auckland, after four new cases of COVID-19 were discovered in the city, the first evidence of domestic transmission after being coronavirus-free for 102 days.
New Zealand's successful fight against COVID-19 was hailed globally and the Pacific island nation of 5 million was seen as one of the safest places, as the pandemic raged globally.
Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said the four cases were within one family in South Auckland. One person is in their 50s. They had no history of international travel. Family members have been tested and contact tracing is under way.

FOUR CASES???? You lock down again for that?
Four cases? How many to a case?
Should have tested the sheep.
It’s an island nation (40 of ‘em, actually) with 5 million people. Hugely easier to lockdown than our continent of 330 million peeps with massive international travel.
Even they can’t eradicate a virus. No one can. A virus keeps spreading until they run out of new hosts.
Lockdown is idiotic, but Kiwi’s are a bit uppity, thinking they’re smarter better than everyone else.
Give it up....take care of your elderly.
It’s not going to just disappear from the island. It’s going to eventually return and work its way thru the population.
It’s. Going. To. Happen.
I find it silly that people think they can stop this dead... they cannot... not anymore than they can stop a common cold or the flu.
Wow. Zero-tolerance policy for COVID?
In an identical and very real manner, the same risk elements exist in society. Consider crime: you can diversify away some element of crime (e.g., greater concealed-carry, vigilance in the citizenry) but at some point, crime is gonna happen and you really can't eliminate crime. Indeed, just like with the stock market risk is unavoidable, you can never truly avoid crime. In many cases, society will try to eliminate this Systematic Risk and not only fail, but incur astronomical costs.
This is precisely what is happening in NZ: they are trying to eliminate the systematic risk of COVID19. In the process, they will incur astronomical costs (i.e., destroy the economy, increase personal stress and depression and suicide rates etc.).
No indication of whether the “cases” had any symptoms or, if so, how serious they were.
I agree - NZ thinks they can manage all the risk away. Based on the two articles I’ve read about their new lockdown and the demographics of the infected, this is clearly not the way to go about it, even though the MSM has hailed them as a success story.
The NZ model could never work here. The island has the population of Brooklyn and Queens on two major islands with a land mass comparable to Colorado or Oregon. Their densest city (Auckland) is comparable to suburbs you would find beyond the typical bedroom suburbs of New York City (like Western Suffolk or parts of Rockland County).
You can’t expect the US to separate families, lock people in their homes (their lockdown only exempted nearby exercise and trips for groceries),and cut off foreign travel with the hopes of beating mother nature.
If you want to argue that Sweden isn’t the answer either, you’re probably right, but the solution looks more like Sweden and less like what we’re doing, and certainly not what New Zealand did and is doing now.

There you go again with that data and logical thinking stuff - you white supremacist, cis-gender, homophobic bigot! /s (hope I really didn’t need the tag...)
So many just can’t wrap their mind around this amazingly simple concept.
This is a very interesting development.
Viruses gonna virus
That is one way to stop the virus, shut down every time you find someone with it. On the other hand, how do you ever really open up? They still can’t let anybody fly into their country, and I think if people leave, they can’t come back without quarantining 14 days somewhere else first. If they are even allowed to fly out, maybe not, what airline is flying empty planes in to pick them up?
The advantage of being an island with someone self-sufficiency is that you can lock down the borders. The downside is, you can NEVER open up, because nobody in your country is immune. And when you get that 60% vaccine, meaning 40% are still susceptible, you still can’t open up, because those 40% could get it, and spread it.
Actually, its 100% that are still susceptible, since vaccination does not prevent infection but would merely render vaccinated individuals as dreaded asymptomatic carriers.
Raged! RAGED! Uh, out of the 7+ billion people on earth how many actually contracted it, and how many of those actually died from it? But hey, it RAGED! Hooo-yeah!
This is the end result of mistakenly thinking we have a right to be comfortable and totally safe. There is no such thing as completely safe. You’re often trading one risk for another just as you have to choose between costs.
We’re choosing poverty and future deaths from denial of care out of irrational fear of a disease only as bad as influenza for literally 99% of the population.
