Ok, I want to preface this article by stating that it is entirely anecdotal and based on my experience working as a doctor in the emergency room of one of the big hospitals in Stockholm, Sweden, and of living as a citizen in Sweden.
Covid hit Stockholm like a storm in mid-March. One day I was seeing people with appendicitis and kidney stones, the usual things you see in the emergency room. The next day all those patients were gone and the only thing coming in to the hospital was covid. Practically everyone who was tested had covid, regardless of what the presenting symtom was. People came in with a nose bleed and they had covid. They came in with stomach pain and they had covid.
Then, after a few months, all the covid patients disappeared. It is now four months since the start of the pandemic, and I haven’t seen a single covid patient in over a month. When I do test someone because they have a cough or a fever, the test invariably comes back negative.
At the peak three months back, a hundred people were dying a day of covid in Sweden, a country with a population of ten million. We are now down to around five people dying per day in the whole country, and that number continues to drop. Since people generally die around three weeks after infection, that means virtually no-one is getting infected any more.
And remember, the risk of dying is at the very most 1 in 200 if you actually do get infected. And that was three weeks ago. Basically, covid is in all practical senses over and done with in Sweden. After four months.

Even more revealing is that the number of deaths from all causes is currently approximately half what it normally is. Deaths for the year in this country are currently about 10% higher than normal, but by the end of the year they likely will be close to normal. Over 90% of all Covid deaths had serious cormidities meaning the victims met their maker a few months earlier than they would have anyway.

According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering, Sweden has reported 82,383 cases so far, with 356 new cases reported Aug 7. They have also reported 5,763 deaths. There is no data on the number of recoveries. However, 5,763 divided by 82,383 times 100 (to make a percent) comes out to 7% death rate--which is *slightly* higher than the "1 in 200" (0.5%) chance of dying that the MD writing this article claims. And clearly, it *is* still a problem in Sweden, evidenced by the fact that new cases continue to increase (albeit not as quickly as previously).
Downplaying the seriousness of Covid-19 does no one any favors. While it might help to fuel conspiracy theories, all it tangibly accomplishes is to make people complacent. And complacency leads to failure to take the appropriate measures to stop the spread, which in turn has brought us to this situation where we are *still* dealing with this pandemic. The *only* way to beat this thing is to understand its nature and to use the most accurate and recent scientific information to guide prevention measures. Pretending it's not a problem only prolongs the length of time that we have to continue dealing with it. Personally, I want Covid-19 gone.

You’re assuming that all cases are so severe that they are ‘reported’. This leaves out all those with minor symptoms. It also leaves out those who are ‘asymptomatic’ - you know the ones that make it necessary for us to wear masks and shut down the economy.
It is a cold virus...it will spread as people open up.and go to school..Masks only slow down the spread..and who knows if they actually reduce cases??? I would guess some per cent..but what is it??? We have been forced to wear them but the cases do not seem to be going down every fast..
Imagine a virus so deadly and dangerous one has to be tested to determine if one has it.

As a person with multiple vulnerabilities, I consider it my responsibility to take personal prevention measures. I don’t consider it responsible to have the majority of the population which faces a much, much lower mortality risk to take extreme measures to protect me.
I don’t think we can sustain the prevention measures imposed on the entire population. People at low risk are going to forget to be on guard all the time, that’s just human nature, they’re not being malicious, and the infection will spread.

I agree that it is possible to slow the spread but is “stopping” the spread possible?
I thought the point of the initial quarantine was to slow the spread ( flatten the curve) so that our medical system would not be overwhelmed.

Until we have some accurate way to measure how many people in the USA got infected with CV-19, we cannot accurately measure the case fatality rate.
If we assume that 10% of Americans got infected, then our CFR is exactly the same as Sweden - 0.5% - 1 death per 200 infections.
If we count the number of COVID deaths exactly the same way we count influenza and common cold deaths, the COVID rate would be cut in half, and probably more than half.
