Victoria, A State of Disaster
XYZ ^ | August 9, 2020 | Mark Moncrieff

A week ago, on Sunday the 2nd August 2020 at 1:43pm the State of Victoria was declared to be in a State of Disaster. This was of course due to Covid-19. Between the start of February and the 2nd August, 123 people have died with Covid-19 in their body in Victoria.

123!

A State of Disaster basically means that the government can use all government resources, including financial to help to alleviate any disaster. Are we in a disaster?

In 2018 there were 158,493 recorded deaths in Australia, that works out to 434 deaths a day.

As of the 6th August 2020, according to the official Australian government website there have been:

So all of these restrictions are in place for a disease that has not caused even one day’s worth of deaths. To answer my own question, no we are not in a disaster.

But that has not stopped Queensland from shutting its borders to the southern states.

But it is in Victoria that the full state of insanity can be found. Victoria is effectively a police state.

So, is this lockdown craze strictly a Labour Party thing down there, or are your Conservatives in on it, too?

(Don’t come to the US at this time; they’re making us just as miserable up here, Dems and GOP alike.)

I personally think that the Premier of Victoria will turn out to be named Hogan, Dewine, Newsom or Whitmer.

Too bad Australia has no 2nd Amendment.

Plus they drive on the wrong side of the road.

Even Sweden got that fixed some time ago.

I can’t go visit at my age as my emergency response reflexes are so fixed to LHD.

Unless the virus is a combination of bubonic plague, smallpox and ebola, it is simply not worth it to shut down everything for an extended period of time.

The governors have all of these oppressive powers because of the emergency power bestowed by statute. So I wonder how long it will be before some Democrat governor decides to declare an emergency because of gun violence and tries to use the power to confiscate all firearms. That might fly in the ninth circuit.

the emergency power bestowed by statute.

Red states need to amend their state constitutions to limit the duration of the emergency power the Governor may hold.

Daniel Andrews, the Labor (this is the one time we don’t include the u - due to an American influence in the early days of the party) Premier of Victoria is a hardcore socialist even by Australian standards. He has a tendency to totalitarianism - and that is what we are seeing in Victoria. The situation here is much worse than in the rest of the country but that is largely down to decisions taken by Andrews - he has completely screwed up his approach to the pandemic situation, making some very significant errors. I actually believe he’s likely to have to wind up resigning from office over this. He certainly should.

The coalition - the conservative coalition - are doing a better job, but to be fair, Labor hasn’t stuffed up as badly anywhere else in the country as they have in Victoria.

Early on in the pandemic, the left wing media here were full of stories praising Andrews for ‘standing up’ to the Prime Minister. They’ve mostly stopped doing that now - but that was part of the problem as well - the rest of the country had a more coherent approach early on - Victoria resisted that.

The conservatives hold three States, the rest are Labor. The conservatives are the
Liberal/National Party, of which Morrison is Prime Minister. All States appear to be following each other like sheep, vying to see who can spend the most money and curtail life and business. You can’t expect any sense out of all this, it isn’t about health or the wellbeing of people, it’s politics.
We would like to know where all the money is coming from, is the IMF going to own us when it’s over?

I saw a video a bit ago (on TV, can’t find an internet link yet) of the Melbourne police really roughing up a lady and threatening to arrest her daughter too, for venturing out of her house. They were masked and not causing any trouble, just outside, without permission.

It’s a strange set of circumstances and differs from State to State. We locked down very early and had very low community transmission. So much so that most of Australia has had zero or close to zero cases for over 3 months. Then came the BLM marches. In Melbourne a few weeks later the block towers that lots of immigrants live in were found to be highly infected and they locked down from there. Melbourne is pretty much a Socialist area. Now that they have the virus back in circulation they are, I believe, typically over reacting. Meanwhile most of the rest of the country is back to normal and has been for some time. Still as I have said to others we may have been lucky with our timing but there is no guarantee that it will all be for nothing if a vaccine is not produced soon. That is what the Australian government has banked on. It is costing a lot of money and a big chunk of our future.
