An Air India Express plane with nearly 200 people on board has crash-landed during heavy rain in southern India’s Kerala state, killing at least three people and injuring more than 50 others, local officials say.

The accident happened at 7:40 p.m. on Friday when the aircraft, a Boeing 737, was attempting to land at Calicut International Airport after a flight from Dubai. Visibility was said to be low due to heavy rain.

Could have been much worse. Good thing the plane didn't burn.

I think the death toll will be much higher. The plane split in half.

Is that plane a total loss, or will they repair it and fly it again? If anyone knows...

It broke in two. Lots of stuff will be salvaged and reused, but the air frame is a total loss.

15 known dead.

I thought it was broken off mostly at the nose from the photo, but relatively undamaged behind the break. I thought salvage was likely, but I wondered about the possibility of reconstruction.

15 dead so far including both pilots.

The front part is crushed. Almost nothing is salvageable. it fell 35 feet from the runway to the fields below. It is a table top runway. Only about 6700 feet long. Ok in fine weather. A trap in crosswinds and heavy monsoon rains.

A total wreck. The engines, wings, Landing Gear all damaged. Said to be 15 years old.

Almost nothing is salvageable.

There are plenty of expensive bits and pieces that aren't in the nose. Hydraulic valves for rudder and aileron control, landing gear struts, fuel pumps, engine components, A/C components, and any number of odds and bobs from seats to flight rated galley microwaves.

They'd all have to be tested and re-certified, but that's a lot cheaper than new parts! (Especially if the testing and re-certification are done, um, locally!)

Indians cheat and bribe to get any certificates and licenses. Just like their cousins in Pakistan. This is not unexpected.
