Egypt, Sudan suspend talks with Ethiopia over disputed dam

CAIRO: Egypt and Sudan suspended talks with Ethiopia after it proposed linking a deal on its newly constructed reservoir and giant hydroelectric dam to a broader agreement about the Blue Nile waters that would replace a colonial-era accord with Britain.

The African Union-led talks among the three key Nile basin countries are trying to resolve a years-long dispute over Ethiopia’s construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile.

Ethiopia says the dam will provide electricity to millions of its nearly 110 million citizens, while Egypt, with its own booming population of about 100 million, sees the project as an existential threat that could deprive it of its share of the Nile waters. The confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile near the Sudanese capital of Khartoum forms the Nile River that flows the length of Egypt.

“It will definatly affect Egypt’s Nile area in profound ways.”

Ethiopia better be ready for nasty war, that they’ll lose, if they continue with this crap. Egypt has a REAL red-line with the Nile.

They've been trying to negotiate about this for several years in order to avoid war. I agree Egypt will do whatever it takes to protect their Nile.

I watched a video a few years back as Egypt showed what this would do to their area....and to the people who depend on the river. Egypt isn't Egypt without full control of the River.

The benefits to Ethiopia regarding the dam are huge. From their perspective not filling the dam, which has taken ten years to build, would be criminal. More than half the country has little water and no electricity. Filling the dam is essential to survival. I fully expect their neighbors to destroy the dam.

Before taking a stand, bear in mind the Rio Grand is usually a bunch of disconnected puddles when it reaches the Mexican border.

Purported to effect 60% of the Nile flow, so whose left get traded off Egyptians or Ethiopians?

I’ll concede, probably not a good choice of words, but I’m sure it is the way Egypt sees it. In any case, Ethiopia will have their dam, but only if they can defend it!

Doesn’t look like things would go well for Ethiopia if Egypt went to war with it.

The dan was built to be Ethopia’s biggest energy ‘exporter’... The dam wouldn’t change Ethiopia’s water consumption, but it would affect the flow of water downstream to Egypt and Sudan.

Egypt relies on the Nile for 90 percent of its water and views the project as an existential threat. Sudan is caught in the middle in the dispute: It could benefit from cheap electricity, and controlled water flows could help to prevent flooding. But Khartoum fears that a lack of coordination could lead to its own Roseires Dam becoming overwhelmed, increasing the flood risk for millions downstream.

Egypt has asked Ethiopia to commit to releasing extra water during prolonged drought, but officials in Addis Ababa object over concerns that it would undermine energy generation.

The reservoir will take between 5 and 15 years to fill with water depending on hydrologic conditions during the filling period and agreements reached between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt.

The problem is Ethiopian officials went ahead with the filling even after it was agreed not to begin doing so until there was an agreement. Then they glouted ..”The river became a lake....the Nile is Ours!”

The US sided with Egypt along with others helping with the negotiations, but Ethiopia officials went ahead anyway. So this isn't exactly the way to achieve an agreement,.... further if I was Egypt or Sudan I'd wonder greatly if Ethiopia would even keep any agreement....which was everyones concern from the get go.
