Colorado cops apologize for detaining black family in stolen vehicle mix-up

Police in Colorado are apologizing for detaining a group of young black girls, including two who were handcuffed, when their car was mistakenly identified as stolen during a trip to a nail salon.

Footage of the Sunday stop in an Aurora parking lot shows four children, ages 6 to 17, crying loudly as police order them to lie face-down in the parking lot.

Driver Brittney Gilliam told KUSA she took her younger sister, daughter and nieces to a salon when they realized it was closed and got back into their car. Police then surrounded them with their guns drawn, she told the station.

“He’s like something about the car being reported stolen,” Gilliam said. “And I’m like, ‘This happened months ago, you guys cleared it, we got to pick up the car the next day, the very next day, so I’m not understanding what’s going on.'”

Gilliam’s car was stolen in February but was found the next day. Police cited that as part of the “confusion” surrounding the stop, but Gilliam insists the incident was a case of “police brutality” and has filed a complaint with department officials.

Sometimes mistakes DO happen.

I got stopped and hassled by some cops once when I was 17 because I actually DID resemble the guy they were looking for. No harm, no foul.

You can’t hold them to a mistake-free standard.

A cop opened my car door with gun drawn. I had driven right into the middle of a drug bust.

A frightening moment for sure. But another cop yelled he’s not with them. Cop left. No apology. Mistakes happen.

He didnt do it out of any animosity towards me. It was just an honest mistake.

1980’s I was visiting a relative in CO and driving their car without them, had some trouble with rugged road and quirks with car so i was driving slow, remote area.

Cop stopped me and asked way too many questions for a “help” stop, had me wait while he radioed back and forth.

found out later in day a car almost identical was stolen and a person shot in the process.

no article written about my being stopped and detained a while......my guess is because it likely happens daily to various people around the country. No real need for this article we are commenting on other than to stir the racial divide pot.

In all fairness to the police, there was something tagged in the database about that car, and also regarding the license number. At least that’s what was reported on TV this morning. With that in mind, the police would’ve been negligent if they hadn’t stopped the car.

Making the occupants leave the car and get on the ground is, according to the report, SOP for that state.

Has nothing to do with black. “Reported stolen.” Case closed. No apology should be given because they don’t issue an apology when they shoot a Whitey.

“You can’t hold them to a mistake-free standard.“

.... I beg to differ, especially when a mistake by the police can cost you your life.

I think we’ve reached the point where non-black police officers will be prohibited from interacting with African Americans due to the “optics.”

Can I hold you to a mistake free standard?

Years ago I broke up a rape attempt late one night. The guy walked away leaving the young lady victim sitting on the curb. A minute later the police arrived.

There was coincidentally a guy walking down the street right in front of the house at the exact same time.

An officer jumped out of his car and lit the guys face up with his flashlight from a few inches away.

“Wrong guy” I yelled. They immediately stopped and let him continue on his way.

I mistake free standard is not attainable by any human being.

Okay, one. But that was over 2000 years ago.

I’m not understanding what’s going on.

Just wait until the democrats get all police departments defunded and they have the national police forces.

I was once stopped and detained at gun point as a robbery suspect. Fortunately, my Ford Pinto wasn’t two toned. I went on my way with a ‘sorry about that’ from the deputy.

Stuff happens regardless of who you are.

Payday coming.

Never been a fan of the seemingly over implementation of the ‘felony stop’.

I certainly agree. But in cases like this, the victims deserve more than just a “Whoops, I’m sorry about that.” They should be compensated for the minor trauma they went through.

I’d say $2000 each would be about right.

How much are you willing to pay someone for your mistakes or am I mistaken and you never make mistakes.
