Coronavirus stimulus: Mitt Romney and other GOP senators propose 11th hour extension of extra unemployment benefits

The extra $600 in weekly unemployment benefits provided the federal government to Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic is expected to expire after Friday as Congress struggles to agree upon the next stimulus package.

A few Republican senators are pitching a last-minute proposal.....

....The proposal suggests allowing states to choose between reducing the unemployment benefits to an 80% wage replacement rate or gradually reducing the extra benefits to — $500 per week in August, $400 per week in September, or $300 per week in October.

Until a deal is reached between both parties, jobless Americans will not receive any unemployment benefits beyond what their states allow. Most states pay those benefits on weeks ending on Saturday or Sunday. That means July 25 or July 26 was the last time those workers got the extra $600.......

Not one restaurant has closed where I live. In fact, most of them are having a hard time staffing them. My wife and I own two small businesses in a tourist trap (cape cod) and are having a great year. These streets are full of middle class tourists with money to burn. I know not every business is doing great, but people are spending money.

Good traditional middle-class employment being replaced by lower income-type part-time subsistence wage employment such are brutal manual labor Amazon or other warehouse work or sub-minimum wage gig economy work - all with no benefits. The removal of the American middle class accelerates.

Those infiltrators in the Republican Party are trying to help the Democrats starve the populace and blame it on President Trump. Then if they win the election, they’ll hurriedly pass laws to outlaw firearms and start the confiscation raids. After that, they’ll outlaw other freedoms to enslave everyone for their global bosses.

Everyone I know who is receiving this money is not eligible.

How are they getting unemployment if they aren't eligible? Isn't the state checking with employers?

Wow

You are so lucky....for now.

Here is my small list of restaurants in San Francisco and Monterey Bays

Tadich, Gary Danko, Cliff House, barbacco, Michael Mina, Aliotos, Scoma’s, House of Prime Rib(OMG)

Mollie Stone isn’t a restaurant but a grocery store. I love getting a big serving of their tomato basil soup and then sit at the end of the dock and watch the boats pass by as I enjoy but, that is over now as the salad bar is closed.

If there was a Gawd all these places would be open and I would be enjoying life.

Even my favs in Carmel, CA are closed until the 12th of Never...

True. Being mid-50s, even working in the tech again is basically impossible. Companies big and small prefer filthy Indian trash to Americans with decades of experience, even for basically entry-level positions.

And myself and my family can’t survive getting a 75% cut in wages. Going from 100K plus a year to the 25K offered by a vast majority of brutal subsistence wage part-time jobs is just crazy. Those aged 45 to retirement rarely have bills and expenses the same as high school drop-outs with no experience.

But many here expect someone working white-collar work to slot into manual labor work. It’s about as effective as a manual laborer being asked to do anything that requires multi-variable calculus. Different skill sets. Brains vs. brawn.

Why did they have to mention Mitt Romney? Couldn’t they have said “Susan Collins and other GOP Senators...”?

Nooooooooooo. So much cheating going on. Everyone I know who is receiving this money is not eligible. No one is checking for fraud.

You do realize that there is no application for the $600/week, right? FedGov just gives the money to the State, who then passes it out to anyone receiving ANY unemployment for that week (on a weekly basis from end of March until end of July). So the only way to be ineligible for the $600, is if you're ineligible for unemployment in general.

When you go on unemployment (at least in Texas), the State verifies your previous employment, how much you made, and why you no longer work there. Employers are required to file with the State if ANY of their employees apply for UI. The amount of State UI is based on your wages for the previous year, and continuing eligibility depends on certain factors. Sure, the work search requirements are currently waived, so many people aren't LOOKING for work, but if your employer reopened and you refused to go back to work, they WILL find out eventually, and get their money back. Plus jail for fraud. Employers are supposed to report anyone on unemployment, if they re-offered the job and the employee refused. At which point, you are no longer eligible for UI, and therefore not the $600 either.

Why do you think everyone you know is ineligible for the $600/week?

Eligibility requirements are suddenly so relaxed in MI that it would seem as though some people are getting theirs improperly, but they probably found a way to do it legally with the help of the unemployment agency. “1-800-EZ MONEY”

Since senior citizens are most affected by Covid-19, why aren’t they the ones receiving that extra $2500 per month?
