The Syrian regime under President Bashar Al-Assad has announced that it will build a miniature replica of the Hagia Sophia, in opposition to the Turkish government’s reversion of the building from a museum into a mosque.

The construction of this mini Hagia Sophia, taking place in the central province of Hama, will be assisted by Syria’s prominent ally Russia and will reportedly show the importance of “peaceful dialogue” between the major faiths.

According to the Lebanon-based news outlet Al-Modon, the idea for the building was initiated by a man named Nabeul Al-Abdullah, the head of a pro-regime loyalist militia within the province. After gaining the approval of the metropolitan bishop of the Greek Orthodox church in Hama, Nicolos Baalbaki, the plans were then presented to the Russian military within Syria.

The replica is to be built specifically in the Greek Orthodox-majority city of Al-Suqaylabiyah, on a piece of land donated by the militia leader Al-Abdullah; a Russian team within Latakia’s Hmeimim military base is reportedly already working on plans for the construction.

According to the Arabic-language newspaper Rai Al-Youm, Russian lawmaker Vitaly Milonov stated that Syria is the ideal location for the mini Hagia Sophia replica because “unlike Turkey, it is a country that clearly shows the possibility of peaceful and positive interfaith dialogue.”

Hagia Sophia: Religious and political leaders are missing their own chances to right historical wrongs

The original Hagia Sophia, based in the city of Istanbul, was reverted back into the status of a mosque after the Turkish government overturned a 1934 ruling which made it into a museum. The historic building, which was initially built as a cathedral by the Byzantine Empire before being made into a mosque following the Ottoman conquest, has long been disputed over and many of those opposed to Turkey’s decision argue that it should have been kept as a museum or turned back into a church.

Following the first Friday prayers held in the building after 86 years last week, countries such as Greece condemned the move and religious figures in Russia and the Catholic Pope in Rome expressed their disappointment.

Syria’s aim to build a replica of the historic building is seen to serve as a gesture of revenge against Turkey, against whom it is fighting in the ongoing Syrian civil war. It is also a symbolic gesture by the Assad regime towards the Syrian Christian community, which it has posed as being a protector of, despite having targeted churches and persecuting Syrian Christians during the civil war.

Moscow’s support and assistance towards the project, according to opposition activists who spoke to Al-Modon, is a method of justifying its military presence within Syria and its backing of Al-Assad based on Russian ties to the Syrian Christian community. The activists also said that the militia leader Al-Abdullah, who donated the land for the construction, aims to strengthen his ties with Russia in case the Assad regime were to fall.

Although Syria has a Muslim majority, Assad and the ruling elite are not Muslims. They are Alawites, a syncretic mixture of Islam and Christianity. They are hated by the Muslims. It should not be surprising that Assad would seek to gain favor from his Christian Russian backers by such an action.

I still say Assad is one of the sanest rulers in the Middle East. If he were gone, his replacement would be a radical Muslim.

That’s all true, but this is still a really weird development. All of our institutions are full on Globo-Homo/BLM, but Russia and Syria are going to build a Christian shrine in the Middle East. Nobody would have predicted that.

Syria has been protecting Christians in the Middle east for decades now under Assad. When the Iraqi Christians were murdered and left after 2003, they moved to Syria. Syria's Christian population ballooned to 20% of the total population

Don't forget that Syria was the first place where the Jewish sect of the Jesus-movement were called "Christians"

It just astounds me that the Democrats (and many Republicans) are supporting the wholesale extinction of Christians from the Middle East and elsewhere...and the task of PRESERVING their culture in the Middle East falls on Russia. Simply embarrassing.

A replica is not the same.

The original was built by the Eastern Roman EMPIRE a thousand years ago. It’s size for its time, its age, its history is what makes it so grand.

A replica is none of these.

Why would this article quote from The Syrian Network for Human Rights, another Disinformation UK funded terrorist promoting fake NGO?

This NGO has been thoroughly discredited, but it is the go to source for fake news stats by Western media.

When then General Sisi of Egypt was ordered to fire on Egyptian citizens he refused. He arrested then President Morsi and jailed large numbers of Muslim Brotherhood leaders.

After the overthrow Egyptians voted for Sisi as President.

He promised to rebuild the Churches that Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood destroyed. He has rebuilt most of the major ones.

Egypt is not hostile toward Christians.

Assad is a minority leader of a country. So was Saddam Hussien, BTW. In such a situation in the mid-east, one stays in power through coalition building with other minorities, and brutality.

Both Hussein and Assad protected their Christian minorities. Bush and Obama’s regime change chaos left the region’s Christians completely naked and exposed.

Imagine if the Saudi, Obama and McCain’s Sunni-ISIS “freedom fighters” had been able to seize power in Syria?

Lest we forget...it was Hilary and Obama that decided to replace Assad and weaponized ISIS to help them do it...

Obama was supporting the Islamic terrorists against Syria, including ISIS. That’s why he could never acknowledge its existence and he instead kept on calling it “ISIL” and other made up names. Syria was supported by and protected the Christians, whom ISIS and other “moderate” terrorists were seeking to exterminate. Who remembers the video of one of the moderate terrorist leaders being funded by Obama who was eating the heart of one of the people he murdered??

And yet, to this day Obama has not been brought to justice.

True - Obama’s Arab Spring in Egypt and Syria.

however Gulf War one and two were mistakes and destroyed much of Iraqi Christianity.

It is horrifying that the USA has been instrumental in the destruction in these three ancient sites of Christianity

Exactly the “Syrian freedom fighters” - who were mostly non-Syrians had the chant “Christians to the sea, Alawites to the grave”
