At least three federal officers could be left permanently blind after they were attacked with lasers by protesters in Portland this week.
The officers, part of the Federal Protective Service, were injured during rioting in the city on Monday night as they attempted to keep anti-government demonstrators from gaining entrance to a federal courthouse in the city's downtown area.
“When officers responded to put out these fires, glass bottles were thrown and lasers – which can cause permanent blindness – were shined in their eyes,” said Deputy Director of Operations Richard Cline. “We have three officers who currently have eye injuries and they may not recover sight in those eyes from those laser attacks.”
Demonstrators set fires near the property, broke windows, and spray-painted the barricades outside the courthouse.
Cline said the FPS has purchased anti-laser glasses that officers are now wearing as they guard the federal complex.
Seven people were arrested during the demonstrations Monday night, police said.
President Trump last week deployed federal officers to the city to protect the area from what he described as "anarchists" who "hate our country."

Any emitter of laser light that impinges on LEOs -- and its operator - are legitimate deadly force targets, IMO.

Green lasers are powerful. No doubt this is true.
Yes. The military has laser protective eyewear for pilots and ground combat troops.
That said, IIRC, here in Virginia, shining a laser on a police officer is enough to establish deadly intent and possibly earn a permanent dirty nap in response.
IMO, the officers would be perfectly justified in doing this since the rioters have demonstrated no restraint in their aggressive actions towards law enforcement officers.

A generous assumption. In this particular environment if I was an LEO and saw a laser dot on my person I would immediately assume that the laser was mounted on a Picatinny Rail of a long gun. That is probable intent.

This is a simple calculator for figuring out what optical density (darkness) you need for a given laser beam.
For a 500 mW laser at 533 nm (green) you need an OD of 2.6. That would bring the beam down to the power of a 5 mW laser pointer.
Glasses specifically for 533 green won’t have the same protection for a red beam, like 650 nm.
You can’t practically protect against both colors.
Another consideration is the overall darkness of the glasses. If they protect from green lasers with a factor of .25, but the overall transmission is 50%, they will be very dark for other colors, making night use difficult. I once had laser goggles that worked great at the laser line, but only transmitted 40% overall, I could barely see my computer screen.
Rifle scopes need laser filters as well, a 40 mm objective lens will collect more laser light than your eye (8mm typically at night) and funnel it into your eye.
If the rioters have special “light squads” then the good guys need a light-hunter squad.

I thought at the time the media was joyously showing that a sniper should be killing those bassturds. Airplane pilots catch that crap on take-off at major airports, and authorities pounce like stink on crap.
Law Enforcement is set back centuries. To what end? Forcing us to break down into militia? I’m ready but why can’t our local, state and federal government help us taxpayers?
Break glasses and dump these criminals in prison where they belong for crimes against US citizens.

In 45 years working in lasers and electro optics there was only one incident that blinded someone permanently.
You do not understand how the eye works and is constructed. You know NOTHING about lasers. You know zero about laser safety and laser damage

The headline says they suffered permanent damage. Every laser incident I have ever witnessed or had to follow up on has a period of time whete vision is not great. All except one resolved in a month or less
