A Way to Take Back Portland
The Wall Street Journal ^ | July 22, 2020 | Ted Cruz

Posted on 07/22/2020 1:19:40 PM PDT by JeepersFreepers

My bill would hold officials accountable for failing to protect their constituents.

The area radicals took over in Portland last week is the second autonomous zone lawless criminals have set up in the city during the eight weeks of riots since the death of George Floyd. Fringe progressives have also set up autonomous protest zones in six other cities in the past few weeks—in Asheville, N.C.; New York; Philadelphia; Richmond, Va.; Seattle and Washington.

These radicals hate the police, reject the rule of law, and are intent on terrorizing their communities. In Seattle, police were forced to abandon the precinct building in “CHAZ” and city officials told the police they could respond to calls for help only in the event of mass casualties. Families and business owners were left to fend for themselves.

This is not the American way. Local leaders who allow rioters to destroy lives and businesses need to be held accountable. That’s why I’m introducing the Restitution for Economic losses Caused by Leaders who Allow Insurrection and Mayhem Act—Reclaim for short. The bill would hold state and local officials liable when they abdicate their legal duty to protect the public in cases where death, serious bodily harm or significant property damage have occurred.

Specifically, my bill would allow for treble damages, meaning a plaintiff could be awarded triple the amount of the damage done to his property. It would also establish a federal cause of action, which would empower victims of violence in autonomous zones to take legal action against senior local or state lawmakers who have tolerated or encouraged radicals to take over the area. Finally, when politicians refuse to defend innocent Americans, this bill would remove or limit federal funding under grant programs that supply important law-enforcement and crime-prevention programs for local governments.

A lot of Freepers are down on Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), but he is one of the few Republican senators speaking out and taking some action to address the current riotous insurrection. Although needed, his bill has no chance of getting through the Democrat House. But it has value in creating awareness and focusing on the problem.

I like Ted Cruz. He’s a feisty one and frankly we NEED feisty people in our camp. Not perfect?? Well he’s good enough and then some. I like this bill too.

You don’t need new laws. Get them with RICO. They are facilitating a criminal enterprise.....just like the mob.

What a moron!
"We", the Americans, haven't had Portland since WWII...
Portland was an easy target for the communists who moved there throughout the last 70-years and took control...

Use snipers to take out the most violent ones. It will end quickly.

And how are you going to get POLITICIANS to vote for a bill that would hold POLITICIANS accountable?

BLM does all this because of their hero, George Floyd. Really? How many have already died because of BLM and their hero:

I agree. They are violent rioters attempting to kill police. It’s time for the cops to shoot back.

RICO, YES! Ted’s plan means the law abiding tax payers foot the bill. How does that punish those lawless leaders.

Nice political gesture but it ain’t going anywhere. Except in rare cases involving foreign interests, tort law is covered under state statutes.

Can't imagine Trump authorizing it. Maybe we need to get some enterprising Korean-Americans from the Los Angeles area to do the dirty work our government won't or can't.

Ted Cruise is one of the few GOOD GUYS in Congress. The bill is great, but the treacherous 5th Column Democrats will vote it down. Trump needs to make more executive orders holding them accountable to assure compliance

“ Use snipers to take out the most violent ones. It will end quickly.”
**********

It would solve the problem for a day or two but long term would turn the general population further against the police. If you’re too young to remember Kent State google it and see what I mean.
