‘Oppressed and Powerless’ Athletes Demand ‘Right’ to Stage Olympic Protests

A group of track and field athletes said Friday they had been oppressed and denied the “right” to open public dissent for too long, demanding the International Olympic Committee (IOC) annul a rule that bars political protests at the Olympic Games.

The Athletics Association, which formed Thursday, asked the IOC to revoke Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter, which stipulates that “no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.”

The group says it’s a “unified and independent voice for elite track and field athletes around the world,” arguing the rule prevents athletes from exercising a basic human right to “peacefully protest against social injustices in the world.”

Short answer if anyone would sack up: "You're here to play a sport not make political commentary. Don't like it, don't play!" Where the hell is mittens when we need him? Oh, we DON'T need him.

They can do whatever they want. The Olympics is a joke. Won’t be watching.

No one will watch a bunch of look-at-me snowflake athletes “protesting injustice”. Past time to shut this crap down.

Ok. If I’m an athlete I would wear a warm up jacket with the words “FREE HONG KONG” on it.

I planned to watch several hours of the Olympics. If I hear there is even one American athlete protesting our flag or during our Anthem, and that athlete is not removed from the team, I will never watch Olympics again. The NFL is dead to me, and that freed up a lot of time. I could use the extra hours in my life from eliminating the Olympics too.

There are 206 countries that compete in the Olympic games. That means that the vote to make decisions like that rule only includes our one vote to change it. If they are trying to change the rule through threats, the IOC has the option of baring the US from competition for violating rules and making a travesty of the games.

We don’t need more angry trollish Rapinoes or big mouthed LeBrons, telling us how everything in the states is horrible. They must have forgotten, people turn to sports for the diversion, rarely to hear some individual millionaire ball bouncer’s opinion on society.

Time to shut it down. The Olympics were reinstituted to build global unity, not protests.

I remember when my son was little, we would watch the Olympics together. I really didn’t care about them, but it was such a joy to watch him enthralled with the games, some of the sports were new to him and he really picked them up quickly, he enjoyed the competition and of course rooting for the USA. He was probably between 7 and 11 - those years, and actually as he was in his teens. I imagine lots of parents watch them with their kids as an enjoyable pastime, but with the politicization of it, I’d be tuning out. That’s a shame.

My attitude toward the Olympics is the same as my attitude toward the NFL.If I see.or hear, anything but running, jumping and other athletic pursuits my TV set is switched off.

And it *stays* off.

although nations have violated the rules over the years, the Olympics, from its birth, has held to a non-political stance. That rule has held for the most-part, and should be enforced, not removed. Remove the offending athlete or team, not the rule.

They are confusing their ability in a certain sport as making them someone whos opinion we care about. We don’t.

My best advise is to do your thing, win or lose, shut up and go home.

PS unless you are participating at gunpoint, you are neither oppressed or powerless. Quit and find something else to do.

If they want to do some protesting then they do it at home.

Otherwise STFU and GTFO
