President Trump to introduce executive order on immigration reform

President Trump has signaled he is planning to sign an executive order on immigration reform. He made the announcement on Friday during an interview with Spanish language network Telemundo.

He has said the order will focus on instituting a merit based immigration system. The president also stated he would introduce a path to normalizing the immigration status of DACA recipients, who were brought into the U.S. illegally as children and have remained in the country since.

“What I’m going to do is there going to be part of a much bigger bill on immigration. It’s going to be a very big bill, a very good bill, a merit based bill and it will include DACA. I think people are going to be very happy with it. …We’re going to have a road to citizenship.” – Donald Trump, 45th President of the United States

While details on the planned order have not yet been revealed, the White House issued a statement following the president’s interview. In it, officials stated that while a “path to citizenship” was being considered, no general amnesty would be granted.

This followed expressions of worry from several prominent conservatives, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). He voiced concern over Twitter, where he said it would be a mistake to extend unconditional amnesty by executive fiat.

The White House’s clarification, however, hinted any path to citizenship would not be automatic, but instead contingent on the merits of individual applicants. This system would be in line with a more general shift to merit based immigration policy, which has been a long-fixed feature of President Trump’s views on the subject.

“We expect that those who seek to join our society will obey our laws, revere our Constitution, cherish our history, support themselves financially, embrace our American values and love our American flag,” the president stated. “We believe in an immigration system based on merit…(and) we need workers, but they have to come in where they can help our country.”

The transition to a merit based immigration has been a long-term goal of conservatives in the U.S. for decades. Some have claimed focusing on recruitment of highly skilled foreign workers would be more beneficial to the economy than the current system, which has been in place since the 1960s and prioritizes family ties over individual qualifications.

Proponents argued a merit based system would reduce overall immigration rates and prevent a high influx of low skill workers from pushing down wages in key industries. Moreover, highly skilled workers tend to be more financially secure and thus, according to advocates of merit based immigration reform, are less likely to rely on public assistance.

The president cited the recent Supreme Court decision on DACA, which determined that while the specific action under review could not be upheld due to procedural reasons, President Trump does have the authority to introduce modifications to the program.

“If you look at the Supreme Court ruling, they gave the president tremendous powers when they said that you could take in, in this case, 700,000 or so people,” he added. “So they gave powers, and based on the powers that they gave, I’m going to be doing an immigration bill.”

A specific timeline for the executive order was not issued, but the president did suggest it would be outlined “over the next few weeks.”

An Executive Order is insufficient.

This should be part of a Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement bill, missing since 1986 ONE TIME amnesty.

The List of Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, missing since 1986 goes like this -

1) southern barrier; 2) require eVerify to hire; 3) end all chain migration; 4) birthright per Minor v. Happersett (plural parents); 5) end work visas; 6) 10-year moratorium on all new applications for citizenship (40 years to allow workplace automation effects on downsizing population); 7) Set up an illegal aliens’ victim restitution fund.

Enactment of these provisions will motivate illegal aliens to SELF-deport, and remove colonizadors from our welfare rolls.

Hey, the Supreme Court just ruled that immigration executive orders carry the force of law, after all.

He’s playing with fire.
Amnesty not only kills his re-election chances, but the country.

I will hold any criticism till I read it.

I hope this is some kind of carrot that also takes positive action that raises the stake for Congress to do something.

I can see him doing something like, DACA Ended and a New DACA Created to allow new DACA Applications with different requirements which would require all current DACA to reapply to the new requirements.

The idea being that the new DACA requirements would filter out the drug dealers, baby rapists, and all the other bad sorts so they can be deported.

No matter what FReepers wish, Trump will do this EO, he will fix the problem, and he will deny it as an issue to the democrats. And he will gain support and be elected.

At least two appellate judges have pointed out the obvious...

Since Trump has stated multiple times that he will not deport any DACAs except for dangerous criminals, why does Trump even care about Obama’s DACA policy?

This will be interesting because everyone is going to dislike what Trump is about to do, which means it’s probably a decent move.

The problem with these kinds of actions is that the results will only be evident much later.

Ridiculous on all counts.

Delusional.

Are there any other major issues that you want President Trump to cede to the Democrats?

Trump has always spoken with a forked tongue on DACA. My guess is that his inclination is to let it stand. The border wall thing was just a sop, when he saw his numbers start to slide. We’ll see if that’s sufficient to keep the base motivated. Plenty of variables in the upcoming election.

Trump tried to do exactly the same DACA deal before the 2018 midterm.

Hispanics “rewarded” Trump's effort by turning out in record numbers, voting 69% for Democrat Congressional candidates, and flipping the House to a Democrat majority.

From the beginning, while he attempted to do away with the illegal DACA order, he told congress that he would sign a DACA law, even offering to double the number of people it covered. The original order oddly had an upper age limit, which meant people who had been here the longest were actually excluded from Obama’s coverage.

But two things. Democrats absolutely didn’t want to give him credit for such a law, and he was fighting to fund his wall, which they also would not allow. So he has had to fund the wall by other means, and DACA has festered.

There should be no DACA law without the wall, and without clarifying the law such that random people can turn up at the border and demand asylum or refugee status. And DACA should not cover anyone who has committed a violent felony, or who has gang affiliation. And for that matter, we should be able to rescind it if someone already covered commits a future felony.

So no drug cartels and no human trafficking and no terrorists.

This congress will never pass any such bill and that’s obvious.

“he said it would be a mistake to extend unconditional amnesty by executive fiat”

Cruz is exactly right. The President has no such plenary power to simply abrogate the naturalization laws and make citizens.

Only the Congress has that right. Not that I trust this Congress - dominated by hate filled foreigners - but that’s the way it works.

This really isn’t a big issue. We’re getting a full blown amnesty from the next Democrat POTUS. The only question is if it’s with GOP support or they do away with the Senate filibuster rules and give the GOP cover to “oppose” it.

While I am a minority, I would deport them.

But they can never be granted citizenship.
