New Developments Show US Ready to Compete with China on 5G

Even before the COVD-19 pandemic forced us to live much of our lives “online,” the emergence of 5G technology was shaping up as one of the most critical waves of innovation that we have seen in our lifetimes. With all the excitement about the potential for 5G was the worry that America would lose the race for global 5G leadership to China. Fortunately, new developments from America’s most innovative companies shows that we are ready to compete (and win) on our terms — innovation.

5G — the 5th generation of wireless networking standards — will revolutionize our technological capabilities. With Internet speeds 100 times faster and more reliable than anything we have ever seen, 5G will make critical technologies like self-driving cars, drones, smart homes, smart cities, online learning and telemedicine a reality.

The last few months have demonstrated how critical fast and reliable connectivity is to our lives. Most Americans have been able to remotely do their jobs, visit their relatives, continue their studies and consult with their doctors. In a 5G world, the ability to do these things — and more — will be even greater. This will improve our lives and lead to millions of new jobs and trillions in wealth creation.

A good stalling tactic, I used to make decisions on telecomm gear, and if I thought that I needed to choose one
of two competing incompatible systems I would want others
to do the testing while I didn’t commit to buying until
I knew the outcome.

TV was a totally different delivery model.
5g is cell delivery model but really fast data rates.
It should eliminate much broadband.

I have not seen what unlimited 5g plans will cost.
You could replace TV with streaming services.

An hour of TV could be downloaded in seconds, like
a podcast. The servers to do this would have to be
installed.

I think this software idea is interesting, but you
still need mobile transmitters and receivers to send
the packets over the spectrum.

We have long haul IP networks, but local coverage again
is radio cell based.

5G is a bullshit story.

It does not penetrate walls or windows at high speed.

Only the low-speed portion really works.

This 5G business all sounds great until you really look into what it might bring. Driverless cars still look like a bad idea to me. Smart homes, smart cities seem like something that may be advanced technology just for the sake of advanced technology; no real need for something that will be extra expensive. Lots of the present advanced technology in our automobiles seems to fall more into the “gadgetry” class closer than anything else. It all costs & is not necessarily of any practical use. I’m not sure what telemedicine is going to mean except it would probably lead to the practice of medicine being more impersonal.
