In a move that was long past due, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder announced Friday the team will undergo a thorough review of the teams name.
The team said it has been discussing internally a name change with the league in recent weeks.
Snyder said in a statement:
This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community is proud to represent on and off the field.
Head coach Ron Rivera said in a statement it was an issue of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our Military.
In a separate statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed the discussions and said, We are supportive of this important step.
The announcement comes after weeks of pressure for the team to change it.
Two of the teams biggest financial partners signaled they wanted a name change. FedEx, which owns the naming rights to the teams stadium, recently revealed it informed the team it wanted to see a new name at FedEx Field. Nike, the leagues official uniform supplier, did more showing than telling when it wiped the teams products from its online store.

This whole thing shows the racism of the left. When a company selects an indian or a black women to be the symbol of their business, they are honoring them. Democrats can’t stand that.
I’m surprised it took this long for them to “cave” with the pressure they have encountered over the years.
How about the Mid-Atlantic Morons or is MAM racially offensive too?

I was living in the WDC area when Dan Snyder bought the Redskins - didn’t like him then, don’t like him now.
He immediately pissed everyone off - players, coaches, fans, announcers - and he is still doing it!
Can’t imagine the FRanchise surviving; can’t imagine the NFL surviving!
Will not bother me a bit when they declare bankruptcy and shutter the stadiums!

The Cleveland Indians said Friday it will consider changing its name amid civil unrest over systemic racism and police brutality.
We are committed to making a positive impact in our community and embrace our responsibility to advance social justice and equality, the team said in a statement Friday. Our organization fully recognizes our team name is among the most visible ways in which we connect with the community.
We have had ongoing discussions organizationally on these issues. The recent social unrest in our community and our country has only underscored the need for us to keep improving as an organization on issues of social justice, it added. With that in mind, we are committed to engaging our community and appropriate stakeholders to determine the best path forward with regard to our team name.
