The nation's pediatricians have come out with a strong statement in favor of bringing children back to the classroom this fall wherever and whenever they can do so safely. The American Academy of Pediatrics' guidance "strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school."
The guidance says "schools are fundamental to child and adolescent development and well-being."
The AAP cites "mounting evidence" that transmission of the coronavirus by young children is uncommon, partly because they are less likely to contract it in the first place.

Reasons include:
1) Children are extremely unlikely to even get sick, with the exception of severe immunodeficiency.
2) Asymptomatic infectees, especially children, do not spread the virus.
3) The spread has more to do with coughing.
4) Most teachers are not in the elderly category (65 years and older) and teachers are better able to handle protection measures including masks, gloves, and handwashing.
I wonder how much the teachers unions paid those pediatricians.
Keep kids away from old folks and other vulnerable people (diabetes,respiratory disorders,etc) but don’t keep them away from the virus.
That’s part of the main point. Very few teachers in the school districts are 65 years old or older. The other one being that asymptomatic people hardly ever spread the virus, and unless children have severely compromised immune systems, they are overwhelmingly asymptomatic.
Teachers Unions? More along the lines of concerned parents like myself whose children are suffering from freaking anxiety and at least one lacks the ideal environment with peers for handling a learning disability. Further along in the article it states that children with learning disabilities and other issues statistically don’t cope well without a physical environment in which their peers are present. Teachers Unions would far more likely want the teachers to just teach online just to be safe. We’re also talking the medical community as well, demanding evidence of what is real about the COVID-19 vs. sensationalism.

There’s no limit to the number of students a given teacher of a particular subject can teach online. Of course the teachers’ unions want to get the children back into the schook buildings. They want to head off demands by taxpayers for staff reductions and the reduction in school budgets those reductions would bring.
It’s complex. In at least some districts in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, some teachers have been laid off or retired early because of budget issues.
Yeah, that one parent that sends Johnny to school less than 24 hours after having a fever...they NEVER get any other kids sick and bring it home to other families. **rolls eyes**; but they are SOOO sure with COVID
And parents NEVER are careless with their kids when they had pink eye, strep throat, flu, or um...respiratory illness. LMAO.
NPR...figures. Must be getting a little nervous...gotta have full control over indoctrinating the youth in order to bring about utopia.
NJ has issued a 140-page pdf of guidelines for re-opening in the fall.
And it doesn’t even address school sports.
It might be better, in many cases, for both kids & parents to have a return to school in the fall. BUT not with these new guidelines and standards being pushed.
In one district in our area, parents are being told that can choose between 2 hours a day in the school building (with no other on-line support), or 10 hours a week on-line. Those in the school buildings will have to wear masks, practice “safe social distancing” at all times, no sports or PE, etc. There will be split sessions, and no guarantee that siblings will be placed in the same time slots.
This doesn’t solve the problem for parents who need to return to working outside of the home, and it certainly is not providing the students with a healthy learning/social environment. I find it ironic that my home-schooled grandchild has been experiencing much more “normal” and healthier social life than his school-taught peers.
Does it address brass instruments? Can’t wait to see what Guv Murphy ends up having to say about them: “No instruments are allowed that you have to blow or spit into. From now on, only string instruments and drums.”
Well, with a lot of illnesses, the contagion is over pretty fast once the medication takes care of the symptoms, or if they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours for most illnesses. I actually asked my child’s pediatrician about school rules last year, and at least in Chester County, Pennsylvania, where I am, the guidelines for children being at school are well within safety for contagious illnesses. Children aren’t contagious for flu within 24 hours of starting Tamiflu. 24 hours on antibiotics makes them not contagious for almost all bacterial infections as well. It’s when they have the fever, the coughing, and the sneezing that they are really contagious, once that is taken care of, then they are hardly contagious at all.
5) Supporting teachers union and current public education establishment. Fear is permanent transition to home schooling and online learning.
Emphasis on the homeschooling part. I am pretty sure that the public schools want to remain the reliable go-to places for education, as opposed to parents taking over for the children’s schooling.

Doesn’t matter what the article says, they want to reopen, just with smaller class sizes and flexible scheduling. They also refer to, “Trump Administration’s lies,” on their front page.
