This is one of the few times I disagree with our (current) President. A choke hold is a valid non-lethal option. Yes, it is not without risks if applied "over zealously" - heck even under nominal circumstances & use there's always a chance other conditions may combine/impact the result ah "unfavorably."
Banning these and other techniques just means confrontations are going to drag out longer. It will embolden suspects/criminals to resist more and longer. If a LEO is putting a suspect into a choke hold they are obviously well past the point of discussing the suspect's behavior over tea.
I don’t understand the animus against choke holds at all. Yes, they sometimes result in death. So would a punch, or pretty much ANY restraint. Seems like we’re reaching the point where the police can only arrest the cooperative...which, by definition, criminals are NOT!
I’d bring back batons and saps. Call the latter “blackjacks” and maybe they’ll become acceptable....
Well, if an officer’s life is in danger (or civilian bystanders’) then a choke hold shouldn’t be used - lethal force should be immediately employed to end the threat.
