Sometimes sending a person trained to think in terms of ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys’ might not be the best solution when the person in question is having a mental health crisis.

I think most people here would not dispute that. But as others have said:
1. It can be extremely dangerous for the social worker, and
2. How soon can they get to the "patient?"
Ideally you would send both a social worker and cop, immediately, to each situation. But that's not very realistic.

I did a couple of very interesting “ride-alongs” with the JSO a few years ago.
[BTW, I heartily recommend, if your local PD has a “ride-along” program, that you do so on a FRiday night, say FRom 8:00 PM until 4:00 AM; that will be a real eye opener for you!]
My observation: Police officers are social workers with guns.
HST, they are trained to be alert to multiple dangers to themselves and the public.
Social workers WITHOUT guns are gonna get killed!
AND, the public WILL NOT BE ANY SAFER!
BUT, THE THUGS WILL!
I guess that is the objective of this pansy exercise - make the thugs safer!
And the public less safe.
