I was deeply saddened to learn from Alan Gottlieb that Joe Tartaro passed away this week.

I consider Joe the Grand Old Man of the gun owners’ civil rights movement. He was pushing 90 and still amazingly active. The longtime president of the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), which he had helped to foster with Alan, Joe was also one of the prime movers of the Cincinnati Revolt in 1977. That was the profound sea change in which Joe and other activists turned the National Rifle Association from a group of hunters and target shooters into the gun rights activism powerhouse that it is today, called by some the most powerful lobbying entity in Washington.

May he rest in peace after a long and successful career of fighting for what is right. We have lost one of our strongest voices. It is up to all of us to live up to his memory and continue his legacy in the dark days we are now experiencing.

RIP Sir and thank you for your dedication to our Constitution and 2nd Amendment Rights.

Ah, the Cincinnati Revolt. I remember around that time, my Dad commenting that I paid closer attention to the "political" section of his American Rifleman magazines than he did. I just absorbed it all like a sponge. Got in a bit of trouble for calling long-distance to hear Neal Knox's recorded hotline messages, too (though when my Dad found out what it was, he was okay with it).

These men stepped forward and forced needed change, which allowed us to weather many cultural and legal attacks. We owe them a tremendous debt.

He was the editor of the publication “GunWeek”, which was a type of newspaper/newsletter. I was a subscriber for like 20 years. It was the only way to get “up-to-date” pro-gun info before the internet, and even then the info was already at least a week old. But it was all we had at the time. RIP sir.

A few times I got to sit out back and smoke with him. Back when I smoked. What a gentleman and certainly a giant among us. Rest in peace.
