Historical documentation of Grant’s correspondence tells otherwise.
He did make use of a small number of slaves that came to him via his wife and in-laws ( laboring with them at times), he did discuss the price of selling at least one of them ....they reverted back to his in laws when he had no more need of their labor

Nothing like a plantation owner, for sure
Just the arrangements that were common for his times
