A total lack of leadership. Either the very weak Radical Left Mayor, Jacob Frey, get his act together and bring the City under control, or I will send in the National Guard & get the job done right.....
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump ....These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I wont let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!

Argghhh! And it is my purse swinging over the screen.
LBJ sends federal troops to Alabama to protect a civil rights march

Been done 5 times including by Herbert Hoover, Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon.
“Feds have to be called in by the State.”
Bullshit.

One difference between the Kennedy and Eisenhower federalizing the National Guard and the present is that they were enforcing Federal court orders in the face of state intransigence. Historically, the President has to receive a request from a State governor to use Federal troops, e.g., Detroit in 1967.
Man, I’d stay out of it and let Minneapolis burn. This is what you get when Democrats are in control since 1973.
“Historically, the President has to receive a request from a State governor to use Federal troops, e.g., Detroit in 1967”
That’s convention, not law.
Trump can act unilaterally to protect life and property and by extension, the 14th Amendment (equal protection of property owners).
Send in the troops to MN, MI, CA, WA, OR, PA, NY, NJ, DE, CT, MA, RI, VA, NC....did I miss any?
This is from the DOD Handbook on the use of military forces during certain limited situations like this one where Posse Comitatus can be lifted. All National Guard units are now US military reserve units and can be deployed.
“”Use of Federal Troops for Disaster Assistance”:
Inherent Emergency Power
Department of Defense (DOD) regulations assert another exception that does not rest on statutory authority, but is available in very limited circumstances and covers
Actions that are taken under the inherent right of the U.S. Government ... to ensure the preservation of public order and to carry out governmental operations within its territorial limits, or otherwise in accordance with applicable law, by force, if necessary. The emergency power, according to DOD directives, is available to protect federal property and functions, and to authorize prompt and vigorous Federal action, including use of military forces, to prevent loss of life or wanton destruction of property and to restore governmental functioning and public order when sudden and unexpected civil disturbances, disaster, or calamities seriously endanger life and property and disrupt normal governmental functions to such an extent that duly
constituted local authorities are unable to control the situation.
Ordinarily, the implementation of such operations must be authorized by executive order, but DOD officials and military commanders may take emergency action without prior authorization in cases where sudden and unexpected civil disturbances (including civil disturbances incident to earthquake, fire, flood, or other such calamity endangering life) occur, if duly constituted local authorities are unable to control the situation and circumstances preclude obtaining prior authorization by the President..
Nope.
Lyndon Johnson 1965.
Alabama Governor George Wallace was acting up so Lyndon Johnson federalized The Alabama National Guard and deployed them to quell an explosive situation to do with race.
Enforcing a Federal court order...
The devil is in the details.
Even regular troops can be deployed.
“Enforcing a Federal court order...”
Irrelevant.
He has the power to enforce the law when local authorities demonstrate they are unwilling or unable.
And that’s without using any of his Emergency powers.
That’s informative.
Bold but risky move when you are up for reelection this year. You know the MSM is going to make this look as bad as they can.
It used to be “Looters will be shot on sight.” We need to return to that.
It is worrisome that it is being spread to other cities, and today is the start of the weekend. LA, NYC, Columbus. So far, they have not become sustained riots like in Minneapolis, but they very well might.
You have that backwards. The President can federalize the Guard and remove authority from the Governor.
Whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion against the authority of the United States, make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any State by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, he may call into Federal service such of the militia of any State, and use such of the armed forces, as he considers necessary to enforce those laws or to suppress the rebellion.
The President, by using the militia or the armed forces, or both, or by any other means, shall take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy, if it
(1) so hinders the execution of the laws of that State, and of the United States within the State, that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law, and the constituted authorities of that State are unable, fail, or refuse to protect that right, privilege, or immunity, or to give that protection; or
(2) opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.
In any situation covered by clause (1), the State shall be considered to have denied the equal protection of the laws secured by the Constitution.
