Washington, D.C. - The Package Coalition has launched a $2M-plus national television and radio campaign airing a 30-second spot warning Americans of the threat of a package tax proposal circulating in Washington. The package tax would raise rates to ship a package with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) for small businesses and other brick-and-mortar and online retailers by 400 percent.

A 60 second radio spot will also start airing nationally on May 7th, running initially for two weeks.

The package tax would raise rates 400 percent to ship a package with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) for families, seniors, small businesses and other brick-and-mortar and online retailers.

I smell a rat. Does anyone know what this is all about?

I see a lot of scare tactics being used in this piece of blatant propaganda.

It’s Bezos money. They don’t want to have to pay full freight for their packages.

It’s Bezos money.

This what I thought. I browsed the US Congress's web site and I can find no such legislation on the docket.

So is this then a preemptive gloBULList Free Traitor™ propaganda strike?

Yup. I know someone who works for the postal service. Their backrooms are filled with freight from Amazon and they lose money on every package. Trump is right on this.

Not legislation. Trump appointees are now a majority in the postal rate commission.

If this happens, it will be the end of the USPS forever.

I wonder if this is hidden deep within Pelousi’s latest stimulus package?

Why should US tax payers subsidize the shipment of Chinese imports the USA?

Not sure when/where I read about this but at first it was supposed to counter China using the system to hurt US companies. The story claimed China could ship products to your door cheaper than a US company could from across the street.

When you order things on Ebay and they come from China, they are shipped at almost no expense via USPS to you. Half the time you do not know the origin of the product because the seller is using a dummy location in the US, but it comes directly from China or another $hithole country. We, taxpayers are subsidizing this.

I bet Post Office accounting is so sloppy that they would also claim to lose money if Amazon stopped using the entirely.

Quadrupling the package rate would probably harm every shipper but Amazon. They'll just buy more vans and handle it themselves.

“Why should US tax payers subsidize the shipment of Chinese imports the USA?”

I pretty sure Trump got rid of that last fall.

Absolutely not. Your comment is vague, but I assume you mean direct shipments from sellers in China to buyers in the US.

That's a completely different issue than the rates that the USPS charges US shippers to ship within the US.

We have been screwed for years by agreements established by the UPU (Universal Postal Union), part of the UN, which deems China to be a "developing country" and somehow their shipments have to be delivered essentially for free in the US. That's why you can buy an item for a dollar on eBay and get free shipping from China (their sellers are also subsidized by the CCP as a way to put US sellers out of business). That's been quite effective.

Theoretically, there are changes in the works that will happen in July 2020 but it's not immediately clear what the effect will be. Trump wanted to get the US out of the UPU completely, but he caved on that. A compromise was agreed to that kept us in the UPU. Hopefully, whatever was agreed to will put the screws to the Chinese suppliers.

Here's an article from Reason magazine that discusses the Universal Postal Union, President Trump's threat to leave it and their change to allow coutries to set rates. It's too short for a lot of details, but it does look like China is the primary target where it is cheaper to air ship a package from Shanghai to the US destination than within the US.

Rate changes are allowed to start in July.

It would be interesting to see if the funders of the scare-vertisements are China, Amazon and Ebay which sell a lot of those items, or some combination of both.

I wonder if he caved or just used the negotiating tactic of asking for vastly more than you hope to get so you have room to bargain. Too often the US and the Republican Party start negotiations by proposing the absolute minimum that might be acceptable if everything goes right and then gives away from there. If the President said that we wanted to double Chinese postal rates, we would probably get a 10% increase with advertisements complaining about that.

Actually, I think this may be a bad idea, even though the Postal Service has been losing billions a year for years. If the USG enacts this increase, it may totally kill off the postal service. UPS, FEDEX, and even Amazon AMZL are already faster and more efficient. If this goes thru they will also be the cheapest solutions for sending packages. Just my $.02

VOTE BY MAIL ..........Pelousi included in the prior stimulus and the new stimulus package again a bail out for the postal service. Wonder why. The postal service keeps getting a bail out because the refuse to raise their prices to compete with others, TRUMP SAID. victim hood reaps rewards when you have people in your court who can help your agenda
