President Donald Trump abruptly ended a coronavirus press briefing on Monday after he was challenged by an Asian American reporter for CBS News why he told her to “ask China” about coronavirus testing, and later by a CNN correspondent who tried to ask further queries.
Weijia Jiang asked Trump why he was emphasizing that the U.S. was doing better than any other country when it comes to testing.
“Why does that matter? Why is this a global competition to you if every day Americans are still losing their lives and we are still seeing more cases every day?” she asked.
“Well, they are losing their lives everywhere in the world,” Trump said. “Maybe that is a question you should ask China. Don’t ask me. Ask China that question. When you ask China that question you may get a very unusual answer.”
The president then called on CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, who was walking to the microphone before Jiang then said, “Sir, why are you saying that to me, specifically?”
“I am not saying it specifically to anybody. I am saying it to anybody who would ask a nasty question like that,” Trump said.
“That is not a nasty question,” Jiang objected.
Then Trump tried to call on someone else, before Collins said, “But you pointed to me. … You called on me.”
Trump then said, “I did, and you didn’t respond, and I am now calling on the young lady in the back.”
She then tried to ask her question before Trump wrapped up the briefing.
Jiang was born in China but immigrated to West Virginia when she was 2 years old. In March, she said that an unidentified White House official called the coronavirus the “kung flu.”

CNN’s Brian Stelter chided President Trump for a “racist” response he gave a Chinese-American reporter during a White House press conference.
CBS reporter Weijia Jiang asked Trump in the Rose Garden on Monday why he cares if the United States has the largest testing capacity in the world.
“Why is this a global competition to you if every day Americans are still losing their lives?” Jiang, who was born in China and raised in West Virginia after immigrating to the U.S., wondered.

Stelter reacted to the moment during a CNN segment following the briefing, saying the president espoused racist sentiments.
“I think what we saw in that exchange with Weijia Jiang is something that has racial overtones. It is racist to look at an Asian-American White House correspondent and say, ‘Ask China.’ This isn’t happening in a vacuum. This is part of a pattern of behavior from the president that goes back many years,” the network’s chief media correspondent said before accusing Trump of having a particular prejudice for minority reporters.
“He doesn’t have the benefit of the doubt that someone might have if for the first time ever in their life they made a comment like that to a reporter,” Stelter added.

He didn’t end the press conference because he was challenged, he ended it because the CBS and CNN -itches just wanted to argue and wouldn’t let the press conference proceed. The CNN -itch was called on but didn’t respond, instead letting the CBS -itch continue her hurt feeling rant. So Trump chose another person and only then did the CNN -itch want to ask her question. Trump said she had her chance and she wouldn’t shut up and wanted to argue, so Trump said see ya later children and left. Those two -itches and the rest of the WHPC are full of themselves and think they are more important than the president — they aren’t. They aren’t needed for a damn thing.
That was a heckler, not a reporter.
