Cuomo orders NYC subway trains sanitized every night

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Wednesday ordered that all New York City subway cars be cleaned every night by Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) workers to ensure the safety of essential personnel during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Any essential worker who shows up and gets on a train should know that that train was disinfected the night before,” Cuomo told reporters at his daily coronavirus press briefing.

“Letting them endanger their own life and endanger the lives of others is not helping anyone,” Cuomo said.

The governor said that he wants the MTA to present to him a plan for the nightly cleanings by Thursday.

“It’s realistic. It’s an essential. How realistic is it? What’s the alternative?" Cuomo said when asked if the state would provide funding to the MTA for the cleaning.

He also commented on reports of the deteriorating state of subway cars during the crisis as the city has allowed homeless people to stay on the cars with their belongings.

"No one wants to live their lives on a subway train," Cuomo said. "We have a higher obligation as a society than to say 'OK, you can sleep in a subway car.'"

THe DC metro started daily cleanings on March 6th.

We shut down low-use stations to make it easier to clean what was left.

We shut down the front and back cars, where the operators sit, to keep them safe.

We cut the hours, and cut the number of runs per hour, to force people to find other transportation.

This is how you handle things, not how New York did it.

Close the restaurants and the schools and barbers but “sanitize” the subway every night.

Yeah that should work.

Insanity!

The subways are the reason New York has more Covid19 deaths than the rest of the country combined. That and deliberately sending active Covid19 patients to nursing homes to kill off as many old people as possible.

Meanwhile, Cuomo’s plans for the overcrowded living conditions in the NYC hot zones that make steerage on the Titanic look spacious...

I’ll believe it when I see it. There’s a video taken by an MTA worker - who goes to work early a.m. and all of the ten cars in her train are full of “homeless” people passed out, raving or doing disgusting things (she took a video of a man defecating on the Under the wide and starry sky

But the City, County and State of New York have done nothing but encourage this ever since Giuliani left office.

Besides, it seems to me that cleaning subways as described would be daily routine already!

Apparently not, which explains some of the spread.

Are you kidding me? This should have been ordered six weeks ago. In fact, these dirty subways should have been shut down altogether.

Total waste of time - only masks work. But if it makes the locals feel better, so be it.

Fomites are less of an issue than mouth breathers.

Cuomo, though no rocket scientist, likely knows this, but is flailing around trying to find anything to order so he can be seen doing some thing.

Meanwhile, there’s the nursing home scandal..

Fredo’s brother and De Blanko have discovered that 1/3rd of the nation’s COVID deaths may have been caused by those crowded, dirty, homeless plagued subways spreading the infection to all parts of the city and surrounding areas?

We cut the hours, and cut the number of runs per hour, to force people to find other transportation.

And crowd the remaining passengers together. That's a fail.

> Is the governor stepping on the mayor’s toes?? <

It’s just another case of a powerful white guy trying to push a diverse city around. If I were the mayor, I’d report Cuomo to that anti-racist commission headed up by the mayor’s wife.

Require everyone to stay 6 feet apart, lacking that everyone will have to wear a hazmat suit. Only one person per elevator car. Yes this will work!

My son lives in NYC and walks rather than take the filthy, scary bus...and he lives in a nice area.

I kind of hoped that the trains were cleaned every night. Sanitized and cleaned are different only in one is job done right and the other is just assumed that it might be. Anyway. this is quite stupid in that it assumes the only way the virus can spread is if it spreads between the last off the train at night and the first on the train the next morning. How about cleaning the trains at the end of the line regardless of the time of day. Is it too much to use anti-viral towels or wipes at the end of the line?
